Gradient Map Not Working

I'm trying to use a gradient ramp set to radial so make a plane start as one material in the center and ramp to another material further out.  One minute operation in the old Max.  Hours of getting nowhere in the new Max (that's progress, I guess). Arnold will not play ball even though I have Legacy Support enabled.  The material in the first slot of the blend material is the only thing that renders.  Gradient map type doesn't matter (linear, radial, etc).

Anyone know why?

I forgot to say...

The ramp is the mask in a Blend Material.  Only the first material slot of the Blend shows up.  Mask is ignored.
