Extremely slow File Open Dialog in Material editor?

I'm using 3DSMax 2019.3 and when I come to change a Bitmap reference for a material the File Open dialog appears but becomes very slow to respond ... with just 5 files present in the folder it can take up to 30 seconds in "not responding" mode with a spinning cursor wheel before I can actually select a file?

Windows 10 1903 (10.0.18362)

My hardware is good, 64GB RAM 7900X fast M.2s and Titan XP GPU.

This is a real workflow issue, I just don't have time to keep waiting 30 seconds whenever I change a material.  Even with a very simple project, one plane for map and back low poly count building ... too slow to be acceptable.

Hi,

Check this page, specifically the last paragraph titled:

Slow Response to Open or Drag Dialogs

Thanks for the link, but unfortunately my system is setup correctly and some of the information provided in that link appears to be dated.

1.  My GPU (TitanXP) is listed as "tested" so I'm good there

2.  My resources are all local and on a fast M.2 Samsung 970 Pro (actually two, 1TB and 2TB)

3.  RAM is now 128GB (this made no difference at all)

4.  Diagnose Video Hardware script seems at best very primitive but shows no errors

So not sure what to say other than the File Open Dialog seems to have a coding issue in 3DSMax 2019 ... I'm a software engineer turned 3D modeler so I know some about the File Open Dialog class and when I've seen this type of behavior is usually when the File Open Dialog attributes are set to including network drives ... this attribute can be turned off via code, however, I don't see any options in 3DSMax 2019 that allows us to disable Network drivers during file open operations.

I seem to recall reading somewhere else that 3DSMax had fixed this issue with 2019.3 but the problem persists.

Cheers, Rob.
