In the curve editor when i try to play witht the curves for the position, they appear very distant from one another, which makes playing with them quite long having to scroll etc. is there a wat to condense the view?

There's a couple ways you can handle this. The first is to hold down control + alt and the middle mouse button and drag up or sideways to reposition the keyframes on the curve editor. Additionally, you can select the frames you want to manipulate and hit those double key buttons on the bottom of your toolbar. One zooms to selection horizontally, and one vertically.
