What kind of materials do you have there? both the type of material (Vray / physical / standard etc) and the maps - bitmaps or procedural or some complex shader network?

FBX can only export a small subset of those. usually the diffuse in standard and the basecolor in physical, maybe the normal map, not much else.

If your material setup is a PBR one with basecolor, roughness, metalness, normal, emissive and so, try using USD. be sure you have updated the USD exporter in the autodesk desktop app (or whatever it's called today). This'll import all of these maps. Small annoyance - to preserve appearance you'll need to change all of the color space values in every bitmap other than basecolor to non-colour. normal map is especially affected.

Oh, and it can also import splines, and it correctly exports object whose pivots are offset.

There could be a few reasons why materials are not exporting when converting 3ds Max files to FBX, OBJ, or GLB formats. Here are some things you can try to solve the problem:

  1. Check your export settings: When exporting from 3ds Max, make sure that you have enabled the option to export materials. In the export dialog box, go to the "Export" tab and look for the "Export Materials" option. Make sure it is checked.

  2. Use the correct export format: Not all export formats support materials. For example, OBJ files do not support materials natively. If you want to export materials, use the FBX or GLB format instead.

  3. Check your materials: Make sure that your materials are set up correctly in 3ds Max before exporting. Materials should be assigned to your objects and have textures and other properties applied.

  4. Use the latest version of 3ds Max: If you are using an older version of 3ds Max, it may not support exporting materials to newer file formats. Try using the latest version of 3ds Max to see if it resolves the issue.

  5. Try using a different export plugin: There are various export plugins available for 3ds Max that may provide better support for exporting materials. For example, the Autodesk FBX plugin may offer better material export options than the default 3ds Max exporter.

If none of these solutions work, it may be worth seeking further assistance from Autodesk support or a community forum for 3ds Max users.
