compensating textures for gamma 2.2?

hey, I used to compensate the input/output gamma for bitmaps on the gamma and LUT tab, but it's gone.

what's the proper way to compensate so my texture files don't look too bright?

I'm using vray if it's relevant. thanks

I suppose you are using Max 2015/2016? Input and Output settings were removed from these releases. Now Max automatically handles the input and output gamma depending on what you set the Gamma value in Max. So if you enable gamma correction in Max and set it to 2.2, Max will automatically apply the correct gamma curve to your bitmaps so they look correct. Also, when you output your images, Max will output them with a gamma of 2.2 (unless you override this and tell it otherwise in the output window just before you save your image).

yep, max 2016.

I see what you're saying. it actually does correct them automatically, guess it's a vray problem then

huh guess it's not a vray problem.

I have these old files I made, old models created with max 2011 or so, but I've been changing them ever since, and apparently they have something different from a new max 2016 file.

while a new max 2016 file will have all the whistles and bells, correcting gamma, and stuff, the old one will not automatically correct textures no matter what, even removing vray out of the equation.

here's a link to the old file, I deleted everything, reset everything, but it still won't correct bitmap gamma automatically.

saved with max 2013+ compatibility just in case

If you reload the bitmap and set the Gamma to auto in the select image dialog box, does that work?

it doesn't. in fact, you can open that scene i uploaded, create a plane and load a new material with a new texture into it, and you'll see that gamma isn't adjusted

Fael,

When I open your file in 3ds Max 2016, the File Load: Gamma & LUT Settings Mismatch dialog box opens up, your file is set to use a GAMMA of 1.  I am guessing you are not using linear 32bit exr texures, so you should want that to be 2.2 for it to apply any curves to your 8-bit texture images.

Also, it would be nice to warn people that you are using a Student version of 3ds Max.  Opening those files on commercial licenses can create extreme headaches for anyone trying to offer help.

yeah, the file doesn't have anything specific into it. just set gamma to 2.2 and load any textures.

i'm not using non linear 32 bit exr or anything, i'm talking about doing the exact same thing on a new scene, and inside this scene, different things will happen, no matter if I set everything exactly the same way

I'm probably gonna have to import my old models into new scenes , because the old files seem to behave all the same way
