Command panel size problem

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

I have the same issue here. I'm using wider command panel as visible on screenshots in the main post.

It's not happening always, but sometimes I'll got only one column instead of four. Docking, un-docking is not helping. Reverting layout doesn't fix it as well.

Deleting 3dsmax.ini will usually fix it for the next launch but later the problem appears again.

What happens is that the minimum width of the command panel is set to whatever size I had saved and panel is set to one column. I can extend the width to the twice the size and add additional (very wide) column, but I cannot reduce the width.

I'm thinking that it may have something to do with custom attribute with rollout UI that I have on some objects. I did some experiments with forcing width on all components in this rollout but nothing seems to help with the issue.

Sharing my custom attribute scripts will not be easy but it can be done if necessary.

This issue was reproduced on base Max 2018 and also with SP1

I'm using Windows 7 64bit, NVidia GTX970 - 384.94 drivers

Please let me know what other info I can provide.

EDIT: Title updated.  -Alfred

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

I have moved your post to a new thread so that I can help you with this issue. In some cases similar issues have differing resolutions so by moving this thread it increases the chances that other users will find the information helpful and that your solution can be marked. I have also edited the title slightly for more efficient searching. Thanks for your understanding.

I don't necessarily need your personal attribute scripts but I do need some steps to reproduce the problem.  I don't mind if they are generic scripts from somewhere else or even mostly empty, I just need to find a way to reproduce this.  Can you please show me how to make it happen so I can log this into the tracker?  Thanks!

Deleting your 3dsmax.ini is a good start, but if you have other corruptions it's a limited fix.  Resetting the entire user folder might be a more useful test.  You can always just rename the old one rather than delete it in case this fails.  Then you can just delete the new one and rename back the old one.

Hello Alfred, thx for the reply.

There is no problem with moving the thread.

So I did some experiments:

I'm able to repro it after deleting the whole user settings folder.

I have currently 100% repro on empty scene when I create my scripted plugin containing CA with rollout inside as a first thing after launching Max.

I'm not able to repro it with anything else. So I guess the issue is in my scripts.

I'll spend some time to isolate the problem and (hopefully) even fix it in the process. If I'm not successful, I'll let you know 🙂

Thx

Jirka

Hello @Anonymous,

I appreciate the update, thank you.  I am not totally convinced the problem is with your scripts, it may be an oversight about how something works on this side.  If you want I can create a totally private folder for you to upload them to so I can test/repro with them and log this if it is a problem in Max.  I am not discounting that possibility.  I would like to log any problems if they exist, but I'm not trying to be pushy.  Thanks for your time and upload if you decide you want to go that route.  Either way, I'm interested in the outcome so thank you for any updates.

So I was able to isolate the script but I'm still not sure what's causing it. I'm doing some pretty weird stuff there, that's for sure.

I'd like to send it to you, however I'd prefer not to share it publicly (company policy...). I can send it through here if you can make me some private folder or report via Technical Product Support but that will probably go to someone else than you. Not sure 🙂

It's up to you.

Thx

Jirka

Hello @Anonymous,

No problem at all, I can create a private folder for you.   If you could include brief instructions on how to reproduce this, I would be eternally grateful.  You can send them via PM if you feel more comfortable.  If you'd like I can delete the files from the box after I download them to my desktop.

I have set up a private folder for you if you'd like to upload your files there. You should get an email about it shortly, and if you don't see it please check your SPAM folder. These files are private and will not be shared with anyone but yourself and the support staff. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please use at least an 8 character password or the Box account may not work properly. Once you have uploaded your files, please post a comment here or send me a PM so I know to check the Box account. Thanks!

In case of anybody else experience similar issue. The workaround to this is to switch to Modify panel as a first thing after launching Max.

Hello @Anonymous,

Another workaround I've found is to use this line before running the script.

max modify mode

EDIT:  Issue has been logged into the tracker to be addressed.  This is a Max problem and not a problem with the script written by @Anonymous.

I have the exact problem.

The only solution i found is to close Command panel and restart max. then enable command panel again.

I can verify that this issue was fixed in Update 4.

However there is another bigger issue in Update 4 (command panel stealing focus and preventing shortcuts to work), so we still can't use it.
