Cant snap to point cloud in max 2016

Anonymous
Not applicable

I can't snap to a point cloud in Max 2016.

Point cloud is created in photoscan, imported into Recap, and then exported from recap in the .rcs file format.

The point cloud imports fine in 3D max, but I cant snap to it (I made sure point cloud snapping is turned on).

I experienced the issue in Max 2016 SP1, so I installed SP2 and Ext2 and am still having the same issues.

Anyone else have this issue or have a workaround?

Thanks!

Hello,

I wanted to follow up with you on your question re: snapping to point clouds within 3ds max. I sent your question to one of our ReCap developers, and he wrote back with the following:

"In order to have snapping functionality in 3ds max, your point cloud has to be in structured format. Only PTG or PTX formats will provide the necessary info for ReCap to compute the data required for planar and other snapping features."

Please let me know if this information helps in re-exporting your data, and if you can snap to it successfully in 3ds Max.

Best regards,

Thanks for your help, Jon.  I have to say I'm pretty impressed Autodesk opened a ticket to help me with my issue based off of a forum post!

It seems that I can't export the proper format from photoscan to be able to work nicely with point-cloud snapping in 3D max.  I'll post in the photoscan forums to see if they have any intentions of updating the software so we can export in this format in the future.

Thanks,

-Jesse
