Hi there! Im new to Max and i have this question:
Im using a Maya navigation Style, so i cant use the shift drag to clone.
I can select in options "dont use maya selection" or something so...
And then, i can use shift drag... but then i cant deselect things...!
I have reading about this, but i dont know if there is a solution to this (or a script or something). My english is bad and im having troubles searching.
Any help would be great, thank you!!

Hi,
I can't help but think that you are going to have a much easier time using the native functions - especially if you are following tutorials. Don't mean to preach - just sayin' 😉
You should be able to right click the object and select "Clone" from the quad menu - then move it as you wish.
Your English is fine btw 🙂

Hey there, Thank you for the Help!
I will do as you say, i mean, trying to use/learn the native functions.
I im an old C4d user, intermediate Maya user and now trying to learn Max and Zbrush... and its getting hard to remember all shortcuts and such.
Specially with Zbrush lol
Thank you again!

Ain't that the truth! Zbrush is crazy! Ha ha! 🙂
Sorry but i cant use middle mouse button to rotate (wich is the most used button i think).
Not only its painful for my hand, its is really noisy (clickclikclik....) and i work while my wife is sleeping.
Just forget my wife... above that i just HATE it with all my heart.
I have been reading posts from years ago (2012) about this; its amazing -and unaceptable- that they cant give us (or they just dont want?) a way to costumize the most used button (you can, but then you loose the shift one).
If i least i could change Shift+click to space+click.. but even that... is a "nono".
I understand this is not C4D (wich im used to), but come on... dont make me learn Modo lol.. there has to be a solution...
have you tried Customize>Customize User Interface>Mouse ?
while in there, I suggest you not be tempted to tick Maya Mode Selection....if you do, you will NOT be able to Shift+Drag to clone
Hey thank you a lot.
Yes, i tried; in there you can set the 3 navigation shortcuts (Arc rotate, Pan view and zoom).
The thing is, you only can use the Alt, Ctrl, Shift modifiers. It does not let to use the space bar for example, or other keys.
What i want is to use the Maya navigation style (shift+Lmb), wich i use for every program (including Zbrush). Or at least something that is similar (like Space+Lmb).
With "Maya mode selection" unticked it would work well (you have the shift ability to clone and such)... except for the fact that then, you canT deselect anything...
Not being able to deselect things is obviusly not aceptable.
This is (if im not wrong and im missing an option for this) a big issue for me; because the program makes me choose between two options:
A- Using "maya mode selection" mode, so then i can use the Maya mode selection but then i cant sifth drag to clone strude etc etc...
B- Not using it, and then i cant deselect anything.
I cant understand this dessign.
I tried to work with the default navigation, but i just.. i cant.
doesn't ALT+LMB deselect for you ?
(must admit, I've been brought up on ALT+W to maximize window, but I've been using the Maya style 'space' to maximize my window lately, it's simply a HUGE button compare to the ALT)
doesn't ALT+LMB deselect for you ?
Nop... as alt+Lmb is also used for maya navigation (for the rotate view), it overrides it...
So you left-click and instead deselectng, you move the view...O_o
For the Mayans...
01) Customize>Prefs>Interaction Mode>Maya
02) Customize>Customize User Interface>Mouse (I guess you'd want to leave the mouse settings as is)
03) Untick Maya Mode Selection, this enables the Shift+Drag clone functionality (if ticked, then you can't Shift+Drag clone)
Now at this stage, most of you would be happy...except you can't Deselect !!!
Here's the secret key........q
That's it....press q so that you are NOT in 'Select AND Move' mode...you simply are in Select mode
Now you can Shift+LMB to Deselect
So now you have best of both worlds, the Maya Nav style, the Shift+Drag clone...and Deselect works....well..that makes it 3 worlds then...
So.......remember........q (just like in a 007 movie)
Hey there Vusta.
First of all, thank you a lot for taking the time to help me. Seriously: Thanks.
I think its not working, for me at least.
I hit "Q" and it goes to the "select object" tool.
Then i must drag a box around what i want to deselect, and it deselects.
Thats on vertices for example.
If im on polygon mode, as i need to drag from the exterior to the polygon i want to deselect, it creates a loop. And yes, it deselects the polygon but it has just created a loop selection.
Just make a sphere, select some polys and try it (maybe im doing it wrong).
ok, i should have clarified.....in object mode, not subobject
but i'll do some investigation in subobject mode tomorrow to see what can be done there...
ok, it's clashing with another feature called Preview Selection. For background info, watch this video, no, NOT spam:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgQEgM1CUF8
and you'll see it uses the Shift key...hence big problem for the Mayans.
So while this feature may be good to some ppl, it's not for the Mayans !!! You'll have to do a trade off and lose this Preview Selection (loop/ring selecting feature)
So my setup procedures are still same as per object mode.
Now the extra step for subobject mode, is to set the Preview Selection in your Editable Poly to SubObj (Multi also works) and now you can Shift+LMB or Shift+Drag to Deselect
(Strictly speaking, I don't think you lose the loop/ring select feature entirely, you're just not Previewing it, and although it works fine for Deselecting, to me it still seems a bit inconsistent when you are selecting 'more'...but this could be down to the combination of 'Maya' style + the Preview feature....it's a can of worm I'd rather stay out of...)
Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,
It's tough to deliver bad news but... sometimes I have to. It's probably best to just learn the Max buttons or get a new mouse with a less clicky middle mouse button. I learned Maya first and worked with it for 5 years before I started using Max and I had the same problem at first, but once this workflow clicks for you I personally feel it's superior. (Also, you don't have to press anything to rotate in Zbrush, just move the mouse off the model and click + drag.)
In Maya, you can't shift + drag to clone, and you can't shift + drag to extrude an edge. So, what you really want is the best of both worlds but that's not an option here I'm afraid. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. To clone in Maya mode, you can right click and hit clone, and to extrude the edge you can use the extrude button and/or option box.
I know it's not what you want, but it's the way it is currently. You can try to submit a Feature Request to see if the behavior can be changed. I do empathize...

Hi,
From your screenshot, it seems the Shift+Drag is working as it should,
What are you expecting from it exactly?
This is such an easy task to accomplish. I bet a single programmer can do this s@#$ in a few days. You just need to implement shif drag on Maya selection, or they could enable deselect on ctr key, just like in maya. Either one would do just fine, but it seems Autodesk is giving a s#$% for users. I am waiting this for years, so thats why I am switching to maya in a couple of weeks, so f$#@$ it. I suggest you quit Max at once to.
Hi There,
I am a native Maya user and i struggled greatly with this aswell. Fortunetly i think i have found a solution.
I have selected 3DS Max interface and manually re-assigned the navigation controls. It was suprisingly easy.
1: Make sure you're using 3DS Max Interface
Customise > Prefernces > Interaction mode > 3DS Max
2: Manually change the controls
Customise > Customise User Interface > Mouse
> Arc Rotate = Alt + LMB
> Pan View = Alt + MMB
> Zoom = Alt + RMB
(Refer to Attached image)
Create and object and shift drag to make sure its working 🙂
Please some buddy help me, how to fix this issue. there was no issue with 3ds max 2020.
Hello,
Could you please elaborate on exactly what issue you're seeing here? Are you trying to shift-clone these step pieces or do something else? Thanks!
