Cannot create objects. Bug? Max2018 SP4. Please help.

Hello everyone,

I think I either pressed a wrong button SOMEWHERE or there is a bug in my scene or in Max2018.

I am working on a pretty large scene with dozens of layers, thousands of objects.

All of a sudden, I was not able to create any objects in my scene. I am working on a visible and active layer, but even if I change the layer, I still can´t create anything. No primitives, no lights, no bones, no particle systems.

If I click and drag the mouse, simply nothing happens.

I tried to restart Max of course, but this doesn´t change anything.

If I try to create objects just after a fresh restart, this works. But once I load my scene, I cannot. Even if I say "new --> new all" the problem remains, I can´t create anything until I restart Max again or completely reset.

I need help here, the project  is on a close deadline and I´m trying not to get desperate here.... Does anyone have an idea? Thanks so much in advance....

(even google won´t find anything on this topic, how can that even be)

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for bringing your question to the forums!

A few reasons this could be happening:

You can try using the hotkey Control+A to select all, that has resolved this issue for some folks as well.

I hope this helps 😄

Dear Mr.Deloss,

thank you for your reply and the tips. Unfortunately, nothing solved the issue.

I have removed all objects from the scene and saved it as an empty (!) file.

Even if I load this scene, I still cannot place any objects.

I have attached this file. It would be very interesting to see if you can work with that.

I "solved" my problem by going back some hours of work and chose an older version. As I was only in the process of linking rigs, I didn´t notice the problem until I tried to create some bones.

The scene was very big though, around 2.2 GB.

Best regards,

Dennis

Hi @Anonymous

I wan't to clarify what you mean by "place object", are you referring to the Select and Place tool? Or are you referring to creating basic geometry creation?

If you are referring to the Select and Place tool, try bringing both objects back into the homegrid closer to worldspace 0, Max may be having trouble with the coordinates?

I see one thing in your scene that may be causing confusion. The Grid is turned off, which can cause some confusion in larger scenes when you start working far off from the homegrid (worldspace 0). Max has trouble orienting the farther an object is from worldspace 0. I created 2 boxes in the scene you attached, after turning the homegrid on ( Tools > Grids and Snaps > Show Homegrid checkbox), I then brought those boxes to worldspace 0 by right clicking the XYZ coordinates on the lower right portion of the UI. Here is a gif illustrating how to do this.

I'm curious, what type of objects are you trying to create? Have you used the scene explorer to confirm that no objects are being created on your end?

I have attached the sample scene with 2 boxes I created.

I really hope this helps! Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help 😄

Any ideas or questions on my previous post? It would be helpful if you had time to give an update, that way other Community Members can benefit from your process 😄

Hello Mr.Deloss,

thank you again for your efforts to solve this problem.

I was not refering to the select and place tool. As I said in my initial post, I am completely unable to generate anything in the scene. I cannot create primitives, any geometry, cannot place lights, cameras, particle systems - absolutely nothing. The bad thing is, this problem suddenly occured in a project I was working on. It worked fine for several hours and then suddenly this bug happened.

If I for example try to create a box and drag the mouse in the viewport, nothing happens.

So if you have downloaded my (empty) scene and you were actually able to create something in it, there must be a problem with my Custom User Interface or, more likely I suppose, with the scripts and plugins I am running.

The only thing that I actually changed during the last weeks was to install the TyFlow Plugin. MAYBE this causes that bug. I will try to find related problems in the TyFlow Forum / Blog.

What worries me is that the bug seems to be permanent. Restarting Max or reloading the file doesn´t solve the problem. To me, the file seems permanently broken. If I load the empty scene that I uploaded recently, I still can´t create any objects in the scene - and please believe me: neither the grid (turned on or off) nor the position in the world coordinates (near the center or far aways from it) would change anything.

So if the problem is not within 3DSMax itself, I will try to remove scripts and plugins piece by piece and see if this solves the problem.

best regards

Dennis

Thanks for the additional information! Yes, I opened the scene you provided, and was able to create some objects, that same scene is attached to my previous message.

I agree, maybe attempting to temporarily disable the plugins folder (by renaming it Plugins_bak) can help narrow down the cause. If that doesn't help resolve the issue, or narrow down a cause, I would suggest attempting a clean uninstall of 3ds Max before reinstalling it and testing in a fresh scene.

I'm curious if anyone else has had any issue with Tyflow, I have been hearing its wonderful and quite fast!
