Hello.
I can't undock (float) the command panel in 3ds max 2017.
in 2016 it was just a matter of right clicking on the command panel and dock/undock it.
This feature seems to vanished on my installation of max 2017.
That's very annoying because I always had my command panel on a separate screen to maximize the main view screen.
Can anyone help me how to get my command panel floating again?
I tried resetting my UI but that did not help.

so if you hover just to the right of the spanner, does it bring up 2 layers icon ? ( it's just 2 rectangles cascading)...if so..then simply drag it away...a fair distance tho...just a little won't work...
(or you could Rclick on that little area then Float)
(NKP - No kudos please)
Hi Vusta.
No, it does not.
Right clicking has no effect on showing any squares.
I checked if it worked on my max 2016 installation.
There i works fine.
so to make thing a bit easier...drag out your columns so you have 2 columns like this...now you got plenty of real estate to work with, so RClick on the empty area to the right of the spanner, can you pick Float and does it do anything ?
I tried that already.
My command bar is standard three columns wide.
I have no clue what is going on here.
I'm a experienced user, also in customizing the UI to my needs but can't crack this one.
try this hack...and I stress HACK, try at your own risk...
in C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\UI\Workspaces\usersave\Workspace1__usersave__.cuix
just edit it with Notepad....near the top you should find this
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<ADSK_CUI>
<CUIWindows>
<Window name="Command Panel" type="S" rank="0" subRank="0" hidden="0" dPanel="8" tabbed="0" curTab="-1" cType="4">
<FRect left="1502" top="144" right="1718" bottom="1223" />
<DRect left="1658" top="83" right="1858" bottom="1158" />
<DRectPref left="2147483647" top="2147483647" right="-2147483648" bottom="-2147483648" />
<CurPos left="1658" top="83" right="1858" bottom="1158" floating="0" panelID="8" />
</Window>
...change the floating=0 to 1....
Yes I tested on mine, I have it docked, it is at 0, if I exit Max and change it to 1, next time I open Max....it's floating....
Please wear protective goggles as your computer may explode !!!
Hey Vusta.
Thanks...my computer just exploded big time. I'm in the hospital now on a respirator with third degree burns en no hair. But at least it worked! Thanks for the exploding hack! 😉
Ludo
haha...as long as you can still write to fill out the compo claim...
btw, do you now get back the 'float' option when RClicking ?
Yes. When I right click the floating command panel, I can dock it in the screen again.
But then again, there's no way to undock it again.
I have to manually turn the 0 into a 1 in the cuix.
dunno...just hoping Alfred would get your details to pass onto the devs and hopefully find out why you're missing them options.

Hello @ludo,
I am very sorry for the delay here, post volume off the hook lately. I'd be glad to help with this. But you and I might be able to solve this one and I'd sure like to try. This is a first for me, so I don't have a process for diagnosing this, please bear with me as I ask a few questions. It helps that you are an experienced user and already tried resetting your settings so we can skip that boilerplate stuff.
Do you use any plugins that radically change your UI or anything? Is Max running on your primary monitor? If not, does it work if you move it there? Is your graphics card on the list of supported cards? Is there anything else out of the ordinary that you can think of? Thanks!
That's a pretty great post by @vusta, nice work.

Hi Alfred.
Moving Max to my main screen was the solution.
Thank you for the support!
Still it keeps being some kind of a bug. But moving max to my main screen, undocking the command bar and moving max to my second screen again works.
Greetings, Ludo.
Hello @robin, thanks for the confirmation. I had a feeling it might be tied up with that. Do you find the same thing to be true @ludo?
Max definitely needs/wants to be on Monitor 1. I have already logged an issue about this, but it does seem to come up in various forms from time to time.
