bad mesh from old max2012 version

hi,

we often get bad meshes in new versions from older max versions if we rework old projects, seems to be a problem in edit poly modifier, iv attached screens + file, now we need to have max12 + 14 installed to get rid of such errors, would be great to know that this will be fixed and we can work only with new versions

I suspect that the issues are inherent in the file rather than in the newer versions. I just loaded several scenes from Max 4 (yes, FOUR) and they loaded perfectly into 2014, likewise several scenes from 2012.
If you have some files which are ok and some which aren't, I would be comparing them to see what the differences are, in terms of model complexity, the size of the Stack (which is certainly far bigger than it needs to be) and so on. It would be nice to know what's causing the problem, but I don't believe it is "just" the version the scene was created in - there's more to it than that.

Hi.

I've looked at your file by opening in 2014, and the problem is there as you describe. In 2012, your file looks fine.

Not sure of why, but when I used "Collapsed to" and collapsed everything below the Shell modifier and save in 2012, then open in 2014, the model looked fine. Also, I tried to create a similar file in 2012 with modifier stack with edits in various Edit Poly, I couldnt reproduce the problem. My file opened fine.

Edit: I agree with Steve. I think there's something corrupted in the file.

I think this is a known issue:

There where some bugfixes in the edit poly modifier required since Max 2012 which are data changing in specific cases

So i think your only chance is to collapse the model to bring the correct geometry over...
