Application Error (Max 2017)

Hi.  I have a problem that others seem to have had in the past.

When opening a max file, I get an application error.  Max then has to close.  Before anyone says it's a corrupt file, it isn't.

It's an evermotion file.... In fact, it can be any file.  These files work fine on other systems in the office.

Now, to the really, really annoying bit.

I've had this problem for weeks.  Eventually, for some random reason, it'd work fine.

Last week I was using Win7 but have since done a fresh install of my system and installed Win10.

Max has been fine until a couple of hours ago and I'm now getting this issue again.  This means I can't work and meet deadlines if I can't even open a scene.

Please, can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Sean

Hi @Alfred.DeFlaminis

I haven't had an issue with loading scenes.... yay!

However, I've had 3 application errors today.

One when stopping a vray render and the second when the scene was autosaving (or finished autosaving).   It just crashed when I deleted a camera.

Strange!

Can you  have a look?  I'm using the sean@icreate3d.com address.

Many thanks,

Sean

Hello @sean,

I checked your logs and all I'm seeing are generic Visual C++ Runtime errors (ucrtbase.dll).  I've seen a few issues like this in the past, usually after a Windows Update is released but there were a couple things to iron out.  Usually they resolve with a reboot of the computer or another Windows Update.  Can you try to reboot and see if maybe you had an update recently?  If so, do a google search about it to see if anyone else has seen issues with other programs and if so, maybe roll it back.

Usually the ucrtbase.dll issues work themselves out after a week or two with the next Windows update.  However if it continues to cause problems we can dig deeper.  I'm betting a reboot should help.  If not, please let me know.

Best Regards,

Hi @Alfred.DeFlaminis

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it.

Sorry to keep bothering you with this.  I've been having crashes for a while and have been meaning to get in touch.  I sent a couple of crash reports over the weekend (sean@icreate3d.com).

I've been having problems with distributed rendering.  It seems to crash sometimes.  I just tried it and it works fine but couldn't use it over the weekend.  Can you take a look and see if you can find anything?

I did initially think it was one of the systems in the office causing it so I haven't been using that system but it's also doing it with others.

Thanks,

Sean

Hello @sean,

Couple things.  First, you are never bothering me.  I took this job specifically to help people and work on improving my favorite software ever, and that's what I look forward to every day.  I am happy to help.  Second thing, it's best to create a new thread for each issue if possible.  This helps me because then multiple solutions can be marked, but also because other users are unlikely to read through 2 pages of threads.  (It also helps my performance reviews.)   No biggie and no hard feelings!

Ok, that being said let's tackle this issue in this thread and for future issues please make a new thread.

I checked your logs and I see a crash in the archiving service, which is pretty rare.  Are you using compress on save?  It seems like the network connection might be timing out as it's trying to archive the scene.  A good test would be to save locally and see if it also crashes, and if not then maybe the timeout on the network needs to be increased so the archiving operation can finish.

Which service pack are you currently on?  Also, which renderer is crashing when you have these DR problems?  Thanks for the information!
