Anyone know how to make proxies with Arnold?

Hello,
I want to export a 3d model and then import it as a proxy, but with the methods I tried my "proxy" doesn't have any materials applied to it and when I apply materials to it it doesn't get applied correctly, and I can't apply a UVW modifer to it even.

I am familiar with proxies in Vray and in MentalRay (yes that's very old, old but gold)  but I wasn't able to do it with Arnold.

I tried exporting my models to .ass .abc and .usd but with all these formats when I import them using Arnold Alembic, Procedural and USD the model always shows up without materials/textures.

My model is using multi-materials, so it have more than 1 material applied to it, it's not unwrapped.

With MentalRay I used to export my multi-material textured model, and then when I import the proxy, I simply apply the multi-material that was applied to the object that I exported originally, and it will fit right in, that doesn't work with the methods I tried ofr Arnold.

When I export to USD I get this warning:

Any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

This warning means that you have to use Arnold's own shaders and textures and not the Standard ones, e.g.

Arnold Standard Surface instead of Physical Material, Arnold Noise instead of Standard Noise, Arnold Checkerboard instead of Checker, Arnold Image instead of Bitmap etc.

The two exceptions are OpenPBR Material and Multi/Sub-Object.

Also important: use File\Export Selected... instead of Arnold\Import/Export\Bake Selected Geometry.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.
I found a small solution, not very straighforward but good enough for me for now.

I tried using the Arnold standard surface but still the same problem, but I did find something else, I imported using USD stage and it worked (even with physical materials).

After long searching I found that I can also change the materials on the USD imported files using the USD stage, but it's not straighforward, at least for me.
I'll leave these links here for anyone who is having the same problem and is looking into a solution, it didn't work well for me (but it was helpful alot) but if it works for you and you figure it out feel free to post back what you found out to help everyone else who are having the same problem :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

If anyone have an easier solution that doesn't involve so many steps just to adjust the material on the proxy let us know.
For anyone wondering this is how easy it was with MentalRay: mental ray proxy
I understand that they are now using more complicated ways so they can be compatible with the rest of 3d softwares but I wish that they kept something similar to MentalRay proxy with Arnold for people who are just using 3dsmax.
