Hey folks!

It's time for another 3DS Max showcase! 2018 was crazy busy, but I had such a great time seeing folks projects...lets share some 3D again!! Rules below

  • Limit to 3 images maximum per post
  • Limit to 1 video per post
  • Compliments over critiques
  • Treat others with respect! Here is a complete list of forum rules
  • You can post any creative project you are working on using 3DS Max in your pipeline, just make sure it doesn't conflict with the previously linked rules!

I am Kicking things off with a fun character model I have been working on lately... very excited to see what everyone has been working on lately!

Here is the previous 3ds Max showcase from 2018

Here is the Inventor Friday Pictures

*Note, if you have any renders to share from the CG Battles from the AREA, feel free! (though it won't count as an official submission)

Okay here is my most recent character model WIP,

I have been making a 3D version of this character I painted last week, but I have been struggling with the face topology (just like when I was in school!!).

Anyone have some advice for smoothing out the topology around the mouth and nose? Right now the nose is a completely separate mesh. Would love some help 😄

Here is my reference illustration I'm going to try and match

Nice illustration, Hagen. I really like your style.Do you have any influences, comic artist or illustrators?

For the 3d model, are you building it strictly from quads? One of the best channels for Subd/Polymodeling in 3dsmax is Arrismus 3D. Check it out, if you haven`t. It`s an eye opener.

The Potion Master is an old illustration i did in 2009. Perhaps i will resurrect him in 3d.

That's super cool! You should totally 100% make that lil friend in 3D 😄

Thanks for the link, i will have to take a closer look at these videos some afternoon! I am attempting to build him in all quads, but triangles always make for good, tight creases.

Havn't tried doing a video in  years... I don't use 3DS Max that often.

Have to restart it again, the water froze - but I think I fixed that!  also I slowed down the frequency - it's a bit too jumpy.  Full video will be 60 seconds 30 fps.  Does a full loop around the building site.

Any tips or pointers are welcome!

That's a fun test, I haven't tried out the new GPU rendering yet, but a few colleagues have been recommending it! I will pass these test render numbers along to the team 😄

For those that don't know, the newest version of Arnold includes a beta version of GPU rendering, here is a link with the release notes for the Arnold 3.0.65 patch 😄

I had a minute to work on my character again this week and wanted to share a render and some new workflow I have been playing around with.

This is a toon render of my character using Zap Anderssons OSL halftone shader.

Waycool_halftoneWIP.jpg

I downloaded this neat new shader from this github link, and followed along with parts of this workflow video to achieve the results.

So far I'm really happy with the results, but am still struggling with some of the OSL shader stuff, here is the OSL shader network that I have currently.

I'm super interested in what other folks are up to in 3ds Max! If you have something that's a work in project, no matter what stage, please share 😄

Oh and @madsd if you see this post, would love your insights on how you would go about blending/fading between two OSL halftone shaders ( i want the noes to fade from blue to white).

You can utilize a ramp over a certain axis.

In this case I pick v (.y)

Pipe it to a mix RGBA as mix amount and set the 2 colors you want in the mixer or pipe sub constructs to them.

If you open the Float Ramp UI and move a control point around, you have both the UV Map you can move around in the scene, and also have the option to blend with the amount you like in the ramp.

Note you can pipe a noise as a weight ( ramp + noise or ramp + 1/noise or whatever you like to bias the ramp towards a secondary component )

Here is sceenshot.

Also attached video, building the ramp controller from scratch.

That is such an awesome concept, I would never have thought to use a data channel to control a fluid simulation! Love it 😄

Are you rendering a full animation from this?

Thanks 🙂

Yeh I will render out the sequence.  I ran the sim again over night as I animated up the gravity so as the torus is formed, it will hold its shape then just fall away.

I'll bung a link up when it's all done and dusted.

Here is the video.  Not the full thing as this was just a concept.

I kept losing shape in my letters when getting them to fall down.  I decided to use MassFX as the underlying structure to my letters, let them fall and then collide with objects at the bottom.

The effect is exactly as I was hoping.

I finally got a chance to render something silly out with this character!

waycool_dance04.gif

waycool_dance03.gif

The movie is way too big to upload, so I recorded some gifs of him dancing the thriller dance 😄 I also have attached the characters animation (un-textured) to this post in case anyone wants to render him in a different scene or something 😄

I got the rig and animation from Maximo here

Ha, @hagen.deloss  this is hilarious! Did you use Arnold for rendering?

Here is a link to the video of the wording dropping onto a collision object.  Using a massfx object allowed the fluid to stay tight against the text until the collision object was hit.
