3ds Max .max to .obj texture problem

Sorry for the long post, my issue is weird and I need some help.

Hello, I am using a car model in a video game I am creating. The car came in the .max format so it was incompatible with my game. I used Autodesk 3ds Max to export it as an .obj file. I made sure to select "export materials" but no textures appeared in Blender even when I imported the .mtl file along with the .obj. I wondered why the textures were not showing so I opened the .mtl file and found that only one of the textures was referenced twice within it. When I open the .max file in 3ds Max it appeared fully textured. I have tried the Blender and Maya presets when exporting the .max as an .obj, but no changes occurred. Here is my full list of textures: "01.tga, 01_bump.tga, 01_op.tga, 02.tga, 02_norm.tga"  And only 01.tga is referenced in the .mtl file. When I open the exported .obj in 3ds Max, it is untextured. So it is a problem with the exportation.

Here is a video I recorded of the problem so it may be easier to get a solution:

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

The reason this happened is most likely because the model is using a more complex shading network than the obj exporter can understand.  You should be able to simply relink the bitmaps in Blender once you've imported the model, though you won't get the exact same shader look and feel without a bit of tweaking.

For example, the Normal Bump map type in Max can support 2 textures, a normal map and a black and white older style bump map, but the obj exported expects 1 texture per node. In the diffuse, there must be some kind of mix map or other more complicated setup and the obj exporter is confused.  Typically, materials don't transfer perfectly between 3D apps and there is often some reconstruction that must be performed.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
