3ds max isolate selection

I hit render, MAX crashes to the desktop, and I get a blank 3ds max isolate selection dialog box. I waited an hour, so it isn't going to do anything, so I have to kill MAX. I merge the scene and the same thing. What should I be looking for to get around this?

There may be a corrupt object in there.  Try merging just HALF the scene's objects and see if it still has an error.  Then try half of what's left, and half more, until you narrow it down to the culprit.  I just did this and found two RailClone objects for road striping had gone corrupt.

Yes, I did that and found the issue, which was a V-Ray displacement modifier. I have no clue why the Isolate dialog got stuck.
