3DS Max: Is my laptop up to the task?

3DS Max: Is my laptop up to the task?

After shopping around, about 3/4 months ago I purchased a new laptop, with the intent of finally having a machine dedicated to 3D CAD. In particular, I decided it was time to learn Inventor and 3DS Max.

Despite the fact, according to the manufacturer, my machine is ideal for the job, and despite the fact that according to the Max system requirements it is too (I actually did some research into this beforehand and based my choice on my findings), I have been having several problems. For example, earlier whilst exploring modifiers. I simply created a a couple of objects, one of which was a spline. I then added a cloth modifier to the spline, and then animated it. Having forgotten to added a collision object so my shape fell into oblivion!... Evidently this was too much for either Max or my machine, and it stopped responding and consequently quit.

My question is, is this a hardware or software problem?

I've attached a screenshot of my specs for your reference. I hope to find a solution soon, as if its a hardware issue i'm going to need to seek to return and buy a new one (not sure how easy that will be at the moment).

Thanks in advance for your support.

Regards

Luke

Your laptop seems fairly decent. I would try the same scenario again, but this time open the Windows Task Manager and monitor your CPU and RAM usage while doing the cloth simulation. I would mostly keep my eye on the RAM usage, if it goes over 90% and stays there I would consider adding more RAM.
