3DS MAX high cpu high disk usage

Hello!

I used to use 3ds max in 2010 if i remember right (not at home tho) and it worked flawlessly, so now that i need 3d modelling software for my own use, i decided to try newest version first before i even think about buying it. So i downloaded the free trial and it installed without problems, but when i start 3ds max.. thats when the problem starts.

So my problem is this. When 3ds max in on, it uses about 40% of my whole cpu (one core is 100% and three others are 10-30%). I could live with this problem for now, but when i start rendering it would be a nightmare. Worst problem is that when 3ds max is on, it uses my hdd for about 40mb/s. Task manager says name of that process that uses hdd is "system", but if i start my 3ds max now, the problem starts, and when i stop it, the problem stops. I have done this "test" plenty of times, so it have to somehow connected to 3ds max. Oh, and its not becouse i have so much stuff in my 3ds max, the problem starts when i start 3ds max in EMPTY screen. (i havent done anything yet with it).

I have also tried reinstalling it couple of times, it didnt change anything.

My cpu is i5-4670k and hdd in question is OCZ vertex 3 120gb SSD. Both are working without problems, i can play many high-end games without problems and i can render videos without problems also. So i dont think problem lies there.

Anybody have any tips for this problem? i could live with this, but i dont think its supposed to work like this, so better to try and get it working properly.

I know, but that is what makes it weird, i pretty much bought brand new computer and still had the same problem, my friends computer has the same problem.
But what could it be in my setup when everything was changed? It cant be any software i install when even if i try in clean windows without any of the softwares that i use, problem is still there.
Those are the reasons why i cannot think that its my setup, before i bought my new comp, sure, i could have, but now.. it cant be hardware based, and it cant be software.
Tomorrow i will test it at work, not related to 3d at anyway but still, new comp to test it out.

I belive what ive heard it matters what cpu you have because it can bug out if its not dual core or somthing not sure. My computer is running at 100% cpu and mine is brand new.

ive got a I7-4790 quade core that i can overclock to 4.2 ghz 16gb ram an amd radion r9-280x with 1tb hd and 128gb ssd also useing windows 8.1

Unfortunitly even though it says my system is running at 99.5% of cpu on 3ds max. It doesnt "show" on my computer i can do everything i could normaly do on it as if it was running only 20% of my cpu so not sure why it says it the overall performance of my computer is still extremly fast. I think it might just be a glitch if you dont have the recomended cores atleast thats what i read not sure if its true or not. I can't honestly can't complain about it since its not causeing my computer any issues while running other then it telling me its 99% cpu usage not that I can see that in the computer while I use it with it running like that....

Hi .. I had the same problem of getting a high cpu usage ...
So my solution to this was..
Go to Customize Menu >> Preferences >> Viewports >>> and then Uncheck the "Selection/Preview Highlights"
Now restart 3ds Max 2016, and enjoy a reasonable cpu usage 😉
Hope this solves your problem

Hi @Anonymous,

Reviving this thread to note that your copy of 3ds Max may have been trying to periodically ping the Internet for a license (although it seems doubtful, since 2015 should've been a permanent license). Alternatively, if you had assets such as bitmaps and so forth that Max was trying to access from across a network, that might also explain the slowdowns.

Regardless, glad that your firewall settings fixed the problem, and if you see any similar issues when running the latest version of 3ds Max, please let us know!
