3ds max crashing while material editing, problem for a long time, been exhausting me...😞

I have had a problem for a long time, and I am looking for a solution because it bothers me a lot during work. While working on 3ds Max, specifically during material editing, 3ds Max stops working and crashes (fortunately, it asks me if I want to create a backup of the file). However, every time, for example, when I press the eye dropper tool to pick a material from the scene, it crashes. Sometimes, 3ds Max crashes just by opening the material editor (in compact mode).

I use Corona as a render engine. The problem started 1 year ago with 3ds Max 2023 and Corona 9. A few days ago, I updated to 3ds Max 2024 and Corona 11, but unfortunately, the problem persists.

How can I solve this issue?

I tried deleting the ENU file.
I tried updating the graphics card driver.
I tried reinstalling the software along with Corona.
All these attempts have failed.

Note: There is no specific situation where the program crashes. Sometimes I can use the eye dropper tool to pick a material without any issues, and other times it crashes. This is more frustrating for me because the problem is not limited to a specific location but is specifically related to materials.
Can anyone help me? or at least guide me to what should I do in order to solve this.

p.s. I uploaded the 3dsmax_minidump.dmp and dmpuserinfo if that helps.

Hi,

I've seen a few of these c0000005 errors recently, on the forum.
Seeing as the error is giving you the faulting module name as "Corona", it might be a good idea to contact Chaos to open a proper support ticket: https://forums.chaos.com/forum/chaos-cloud/chaos-cloud-issues/1172664-corona-crashes-randomly-when-r...

Microsoft classes these errors as Memory Buffer Overruns.

One interesting thing that article says at the bottom of the page is that sometimes, rarely, the Hardware RAM can develop a flipped-bit. So, regardless of what type/version of software you are running whenever any application tries to read/write or execute on that flipped-bit it will freak out and crash.

Interesting, I will  contact Chaos for that issue, but what if what you said about the Microsoft article is true? Does this require me to replace my RAM to solve the problem?

Thank you

Hi,

Yeah regarding the RAM, if you have more than 2 stick, eg, 4 sticks, you might be able to temporarily pop two sticks out and see if it still crashes. It might be also benifitial to run something like MemTest64 to audit your RAM hardware.

Also you could download WinDbg yourself and take a look inside the dmp file to see if anything stands out as glaringly obviously wrong. I'm running it on your dmp file now, but I think that because it is executing the debugging on my pc rather than yours the results might be skewed (e.g. my Windows/AutoDesk/ Corona files might be fine, whereas yours might not be.

Hi,

Here is the only thing of note that the debugger picked up inside the dmp file:
"

This dump file has an exception of interest stored in it.
The stored exception information can be accessed via .ecxr.
(1042c.84a0): Access violation - code c0000005 (first/second chance not available)

So not much more help there than what the 3DSMax error has already stated.
Chaos support would be my next port of call.
