3ds max crashes when render uvw template is selected

hi all

As I learn 3ds max now while trying to do uvw unwrapping, when i click render uvw template in the tools menu in the UV editor i get an error that crashes 3ds max 

i dont even know where to start troubleshooting. what files would i need to upload to help with troubleshooting this issue?

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

When Max crashes it usually opens up a crash report window.  If you put your email address in that window before you submit it, I can search it and find out what was causing the crash most of the time.  I am happy to do that.  Also, if you want to post your scene file I'll happily check it out and offer suggestions, or I could create a private folder if it's top secret for you as well. 

Generally speaking I would suggest making sure you have the latest service packs for 3ds Max.  You can check at Manage.Autodesk.com.  Could you please tell me your current graphics cards and Windows version?  (Also, home or professional Windows?)  Thanks for doing that!  I'll do whatever I can to help you.

I just wanted to follow up on this.  I did a search for your crash logs and I did find them, it seems you already had entered the email address.  Thanks for doing that!  I see this issue reported in the tracker and seems to be related to OpenGL and the Render UVW template button.  Are you using OpenGL?  I also noticed it happens with Legacy D3D and I have added that information to the tracker.  I did have success with Nitrous Software so if you can, please try switching to that if your current card isn't supported in Nitrous DX9 or Nitrous DX11.  Thanks for trying that for me.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

I am required to reply in the forums and not via email, thanks for your understanding.  What happened when you changed graphics modes?  Are you using OpenGL?
