For some reason, the 2016 version of max just randomly closes after about 20 minutes with no warning and no following "crash report" dialogue box. No matter what I'm doing it will crash and the time changes each time.
What I have done:
- Max has admin permissions
- I have completely uninstlled and reinstalled absolutely averything including every other piece of autodesk software I have
- I have deleted the preferences files/folder
- I have removed all plugins and addons
- I basically reverted my computer to "never even heard of autodesk" conditions before reinstalling it.
- I have gotten all the newest service packs using the Autodesk Software manager
My computer:
- Windows 10 Home
- MSi X99 SLI Krait Edition (MS-7885)
- 32GB RAM
- Intel Core i7-5820K @ 3.30GHz | 6 cores | 12 threads
- EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770

Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for bringing your question to the forums, it looks like you are visiting as a new member to the 3DS Max forum. I want to extend a warm welcome to the Autodesk Community!
It looks like this post is a few years old, is your issue regarding 3ds Max 2016, or another version of the software?
Have you been able to start 3ds Max in the past (did this suddenly happen mid-project)? Or was this originally happening on a fresh installation? If you haven't been able to access the product at all, I would say your best bet is on the Installation and Licensing forums, which I can transfer this thread to.
Either way, it would also be helpful if you could give me a dxdiag of your machine specs, here is an article on how to obtain this information.
Talk to you soon 😄

Hi Hagen,
Thanks for the quick response,
I am using 3ds max 2016, just because this is the one I learnt on and I'm not comfortable updating. I started using another laptop and ever since I installed it on this laptop it hasn't been working. So it doesn't matter if I have a project open or not, if I simply open the program it closes every 20 minutes. I render using Vray and I can't have any renders more than 20 minutes and I tried everything, reinstalling, repairing, deleting all the folders related to 3ds max, uninstalling Vray, but nothing works. I am pretty sure the problem somewhere in the folders but I cant spot it.
Attached is my Dxdiag,
Hope to hear from you soon,
kind regards,
Malak

It looks like the graphics card in your laptop isn't on the list of supported hardware for 3ds Max 2016.
Your graphics card is the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family on update 10.18.0014.4414, i would first suggest seeing if there is a more recent update, and updating that manually via this site.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, I would suggest seeing if you can change the graphics mode that 3ds Max starts in, here is an article walking through how to do so.
I hope this helps!
