3ds max 2017 & vray 3.4 memory overload and crashed

Hi guys,

Complete noob in 3Ds Max 2017 here. I've been trying to render an interior scene (1,186,410 polys) using vray. I set it to high quality and set Dynamic Memory Limit to 11000 (I have 16gb).

However, once I start the rendering process. It went super slow and crashed the 3Ds max, with an error message saying it's running out of memory.

So, I open task manager to track down what happen on the memory. As I render again, I saw the 'In use' physical memory bar went up and up all the way to 16gb and then watch the modified cached memory retaliate and kept increasing all the way to 15gb. Leaving 1gb for 3ds max to keep its software open and render + windows 10 to run.

It seems to me that dynamic memory limit doesn't work at all. Now, I'm forced to activate 'Use Embree' to render my scene (people say this method is slower to render but, I find it way faster than my initial setup -__-!).

I need help understanding what's going on and how to fix this? is this hardware malfunction or software?

motherboard MSI x370, processor (Ryzen), new Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080, and 2x8gb Ram DDR4.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

It would be best to direct Vray questions to the Chaosgroup forum.  They have very good support there and are in a better position to help with this issue as they are the makers of Vray.   (BTW - I've found for me Embree is faster for most things but has the occasional hangup.  I use it 95% of the time.)

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply. I have notified Chaos Group in regards to the issue and they have yet to reply.

As I progress further with my arch viz, Embree starts to show the same symptoms as normal rendering (without embree). It starts to take most of my memory and crashed the 3ds Max 2017.

So, yeah.... At the moment I can't have too many polys on my screen.

Hello @Anonymous,

It sounds a bit like you have some kind of RAM issue on your machine possibly.  You might do a google search to verify the right configuration settings for your RAM.  I wonder if one of the chips is going bad or was bad and it's causing these problems...

Yeah, I've checked my RAMs and they seem to work just fine. I mean, my pc detect it and I just recently purchased the RAMs. I tried contacting Chaos Group for support and they have yet to reply. I also tried posting on their forum but were blocked from doing so.

hi.

try to put dynamic memory limit to 0 so vray is going to handle that.

put default geo to auto too.

try to check the "conserve memory"

Vray is usually pretty good at dealing with huge scene. If you use displacement, try to disable it in the vray settings / global switch.

Do you use some sort of plugin except vray ?

try also to disable caching gi technics. use double brute force for testing purposes.
