3DS Max 2014/2015 and windows 8.1

Hi everybody 🙂

I'm dealing with a very strange issue, wich I can't get solved.

I have a new computer with AMD and W8.1, very fast and reliable. I have installed 3DS Max 2014, some months after started giving errors at startup (some driver not found) After that, 3ds Max crashed and never wanted to start up again... Unistalled and re-installed and the same issue happened but short days after installation.

I thought might have been a W8.1 incompatibility, so I moved to 3ds Max 2015, but the same problem again, with the difference that the first time the GUI didn't respond anymore and 3ds max would crash. Reinstalled it twice already and only gets worse. I have installed a script yesterday wich I had the opportunity to only use once and at the second time the script never worked anymore and now 3ds Max doesn't start up anymore.

I have formatted my computer twice because of 3ds max, thinking that might be windows 8 trolling.

This is going to be my 3rd and last time I try with 3ds max, else I'll move to other software...

Since then for fault of this issue my studies (3D) got stuck in a bunch of things to do wich I cannot finish....

Could please anybody help me with this issue? 😞

Thank you so much in advance 🙂 🙂 🙂

Are you sure that your complete system specs meet the 3ds Max 2015 requirements?  You didn't list what video card you system has.  Have you updated all your drivers and bios?

Have you tried deleting your User Folder to reset your preferences?

I have it all.... AMD R5 8GB RAM 1TB HDD

if it is indeed W8.1 would not surprise me because many of my apps are not compatible and "blocks" the perfomance of the computer while running big apps 😧

The R5 doesn't appear on Autodesk's list of hardware, that might be an issue, http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/syscert?siteID=123112&id=18844534&results=1&stype=graphic&produ...

Also, are you using Windows 8.1 Pro ?

I have been using 3ds Max Design 2015 SP3/Ext2 on Windows 8.1 Pro with Intel cpu and an nvidia 980 graphics card for a week and aside from the run time error at shut down ( that I also had on another system with Windows 7 Pro ) I haven't had any problems with Windows 8.1 Pro and Max 2015.  The only thing I have experienced is an issue with older files from Max 2013 that have boolean objects in them giving me a missing plug in warning when I open them in 2015 that I need to test on the other Windows 7 machine to confirm.

Shouldn't be the processor - there's enough abstraction between it and the program that it won't matter.  It *might* be a problem with fighting between the dedicated video card and any on-board video.  I'm not familiar with the AMD processor line to know if the processor has on-board video or not, or whether it will cause this type of conflict; I do know this can happen with the more recent generations of Intel processors.

8GB RAM is bit low, but should be ok with simple school projects.  Doubling it at least would be a good idea.

From what you describe, it sounds like GPU driver error. R5 is low end line of AMD GPUs. You could download GPU-Z and it will tell you the exact name of your GPU and you could download the appropriate drivers for it.

Your CPU is fine, as any CPU in the last 10 years will work fine with Max. Your RAM is fine too. 8gb is more than plenty for a beginner that deals with thousands of polygons and a handful of objects within a single scene. Even if you use thousands of objects and millions of polygons, 8gb is still good. 64bit windows will use virtual RAM. It will be slow and you will notice it's slow, but it will still work as expected.

If you're sure you've got an AMD GPU, update the drivers from their site, not via windows automated driver update. Max needs 512mb of video RAM for nitrous viewports to work properly. Video RAM is different and separate from system RAM (your 8gb) You can "Change Graphics Mode" via shortcut for 3ds Max to revert from Nitrous to DirectX, OpenGL or even software rendering mode. Any number or all of those will work even with a low end GPU/windows only drivers you may have right now. Nitrous is the best looking and the fastest one, but it does cost the most in resources.

Totally agree with that.. I have tried to change the drivers but none actually fixes/help the problem... yesterday 3ds max stopped working again and now again doesn't start up anymore 😞

Yes i really have an R5, is not the best GPU.... I could run 3ds max 2014 in my netbook without much problems (limitations on polys and so on but further works)(1GB RAM, W7, integrated graphics, intel atom)

I have a cuad-core processor (A6) wich is not the best compared to an A10 but is very fast and runs everything, what I noticed is that the quality of GPU is not so wow and W8.1 (pro) slows down many apps like FSX/FS9, games, etc... I got disappointed on windows and I fear windows causes also this problem, would somebody agree with my theory and does somebody also have this problem?
