2020 and 2021 - bad performance in 4k resolution

Hello.
3D max is almost unusable while using with 4k display - framerate drops to 1-2 per frame when 3dMax is fullscreen mode. When I rescale it to fill 1/4 of my screen, the framerate goes to normal values. I've tried it in 2020, 2021 and 2019. In 2019 it was fine. I though My pc was to weak, but after moving from old i9 to new 12 core AMD cpu and adding more ram, it works even worse than before. The only component that wasn't replaced was the GPU ( GF 1070). I did clean Windows install and also moved to fast SSD drive. Anyone else have the same problem or knows how to solve it?

edit:
Extra info. The whole program lags even on an empty scene.

Hi @krystian.slusarz ,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We have double checked the problem.  We couldn't repro it.  Is your machine a laptop?  If yes, can you set 3dsmax.exe to use the NVidia card, through Nvidia control panel?

Please let us know if this helps.

Hi @krystian.slusarz , I wonder if you have installed V-Ray and using the Custom Defaults Switcher? If you do, please try to switch back to max from V-Ray. This could be one workaround. Another would be to delete files from C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup.

Hi, Sorry for the super late reply.
I'm starting to suspect my GPU - i'll probably buy a new one soon to check if it fix the problem.
I'm not using laptop nor V-ray. It happens even on a super clean install (new PC, fresh ssd, system and 3d max). GPU is the only element that i wasn't able to change so far.

Edit:

I switched to a 4k TV instead of my 4k monitor (to which i don't have access atm.) and it seems to work fine so far - ill probably work on the TV for a bit to make sure there's no issues there as well.
Should i keep this thread open until i find out what was the exact hadware issue? (So far I have the GPU, Monitor and the cable (DisplayPort vs HDMI) as a suspect :P)

2 years later - I've upgraded my GPU from 1070 to 3070 and the performance is even worse now >. <. Only way to get good performance is to switch to DX9 instead of DX11

I've got a 3070 and 4k monitor and I don't have any problems in 2021.  I noticed you are on Windows 10 Home, but Professional is what is listed in system requirements.  Some folks say it doesn't matter but maybe it does, I'm not sure on that.

Just because parts are new doesn't mean they are correctly configured in the bios.  For example, it's crazy how many people install SSD's but don't enable AHCI in the bios.  (If your entire machine is prebuilt then that's not likely it.)  Sometimes it's an inefficient power supply or an unstable current on the 12V rails to the GPU.  But those are also unlikely on a prebuilt machine.  Possibly the driver that is installed isn't the production driver, it's the game driver or non-WHQL driver which can also cause problems.

Is it possible that the motherboard has an onboard graphics card as well as the NVIDIA card?  Possibly the onboard card is being seen as the default card?

If the program lags even on an empty scene then it has to be a system issue of some kind.  You can check the event viewer logs in windows to see if you are getting warnings or something.  Also sometimes real-time scanning software like A/V or malware detectors can cause lag in 3dsmax.  Avast used to cause problems for me and I'd have to completely reinstall it to fix those problems.

I would start with the GPU driver, personally.

Some of the older version of 3d max worked fine in 4k, just like this one works fine but only in DX9 mode 😕

I have to say i didn't play much in BIOS (or whatever it's called now) but it was build by someone who has 20+years experiance in assembling PC's. I might look into those settings later on but it's strange how everything else works fine but not Max in DX11 :/. I do use game-ready drivers not the other ones - i don't know how having the production ready-one would affect my ability to play games (which i need to do as part of my work).

I do not have integrated GPU. I'll check how it works with A/V and malware disabled later on.

Thanks for all the tips. Hopefully one of em solves my problem :d

Feels like maybe drivers.  However if it's AHCI you'll have to reinstall windows and whatnot, you can't simply enable that after you're installed an OS on the SSD.  Hope it's not that.

Your Event Viewer in windows should give you some clues about what is happening.  Fingers crossed.

Hi, how's it going?

When I first tried Max 2021 on 4K it was giving me trouble. So I tried 2022. Never install odd numbered releases, 3s, 7s, 11s, 5s, 13s, 19s Etc. This is a well known, but seldom mentioned industry 'fact'.*

Do you have two different screens, or maybe two with same OEM parts but different year, same 'Manfacturer', but different size screens. Or an ideally matched pair of monitors, same size, same brand, same color profile, resolution (very important).

If one of your monitors even is running a different color gradient setting #Screen 1 /2 (Adobe RGB / North America Standard for instance) can set Max off on a wobbly.    Especially at 4K.

Depending on your graphics card, its throughput, colour depth, revision, driver, connection port type, number of pins, on battery current or plugged in. It's a minefield. The BETA tests only covered a small range, comparitivly speaking.

If it ever crashes out under duress again, please make sure to fill out the CER report, and send the scene to the Devs if possible.

*May not be an actual fact.

Best Regards, 🙂
