2017 Normals Bug

I'm just trying out 3ds max 2017 with sp1 installed.

I'm using vray 3.40.02

I've created a simple scene with some spheres and a box and camera and light. Everything is fine at this point.

I then render the scene and everything is still fine and the render comes out as expected.

I then decide to up the segments on my sphere and box and the normal's on those objects go weird, in both the view port and and any subsequent renders.

however if I save the scene (with the problem normals) and then reload it then the normal are fixed again.

Is this a bug and is there a work around?

thanks

I'm seeing the exact same thing. It appears to be a V-Ray issue. If I switch to the 'Scanline' renderer, I don't see the issue.

You should visit the forum at Chaos Group and post this so the V-Ray guys are aware of it.

Edit: I just confirmed that it does not happen in Max 2016. This is a Max 2017 issue for sure.

Edit #2: I just posted it at Chaos Group.

Yes this is a bug. It doesn't occur with any of the Autodesk renderers (Scanline, ART, Mental ray).

The only work around is as you've discovered -  save your scene, reset max, and reload scene.

Vlado at Chaos Group has already stated that Chaos can do nothing to fix it from their end, so it needs to be reported to Autodesk. The more reports we can do, the more likely Autodesk will fix it. Report the bug here:

I would be interested to know if it occurs with any other 3rd party renderers (e.g. Corona, Final Render, 3Delight etc). Anyone know?

Thanks.

There was one other work around I'm aware of, and that to add an edit normal's over the top. That seems to fix as well.
