Understanding Map animation (for different skeletons)

Hi everyone,
I have had a bit of difficulty understanding the map animation. Am I right in imagining that I can use map animation to load an animation from one skeleton into another one? Doing some sort of retarget where I manually point the analog bones between the two skeletons and so the program copies rotation, translation, etc ... from each bone of the original animation to the new skeleton, so you can copy animations between different rigs. Does this map animation function serve this purpose or am I misunderstanding?
