How do you keep weights?

Hi
So unlike a UVW Unwrap modifier, where if you collapse it down it keeps all of the unwraps you've made, why doesn't the Skin modifier do the same? Is there any way of retaining all of your old weights if you add a new Skin modifier further down the line to modify a little something?
