How do i switch cameras during an animation in Max 2015?

I have 2 cameras. One is animated to follow a ship as it flies through space. After a while it stops following and the ship goes off into the distance toward a planet.

At this point is when i need camera 1 to switch to camera 2 in the animation.

Camera 2 is positioned over a plane to represent the surface of the planet and will capture the ship landing.

I just can't figure out how to get camera 1 to switch to camera 2 during the animation.

Please help, i don't have much time to get this finished and i'm almost a complete noob at animating.

There are still no camera switcher in Max 😞

So you have a couple of options.

Inside Max you can use the Video Post tool (from render menu) to setup the framerange for cam 1 (and select cam1) then for cam 2 and the render the whole thing out (as single frames) and again you can use the video post to turn the frames into a videofile.

On scriptspot.com there are a couple of old tools called camera switcher, but I don´t know the quality or compatiblitity with current release of Max?

I think you can expect to see the camera switcher from maya/motion builder to arrive in Max in the future.

Thanks for that, surprised there isn't a simple function for this already.
I solved it by just using the one camera and have it change to the new location by animating it to move one key frame after it's final position in the first shot.
Gives the illusion it's switching to a new camera, so works for me 🙂

State Sets, though only if you have the appropriate Extension installed which in turn requires Subscription.

Good solution too, that was the third solution I should have suggested.

God that you solved it though 😊

I know you've said you solved your problem, but I would suggest using the Batch Render feature in 3ds Max, I've used it before and it's very easy to setup.

Here's a good reference for switching cameras:

@hazmondo is right.

A more important question is why are you trying to do this in Max? Why not render two shots and then use post processing software like After Effects/Adobe Premiere to stitch them together. You get far more control that way. 🙂

There's the Camera Sequencer in 2015 Extension 2.
