Creating Bones Tied to Specific Parts of A Mesh?

Hi there, I'm really new to 3DS Max I've mostly used Blender. I'm trying to create animations for an FPS game in Unity. I have a rig for arms and gun meshes but I'd like to create bones that are tied to specific parts of the mesh on the gun such as the trigger, magazine, etc. I've been Googling for the past few days and am getting nowhere unfortunately. I found this tutorial here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paCJ3zFwnLg&t=685s that I was trying to follow but the things he does don't work the same when I try them. Namely the skin modifier just applies automatic weighting and to unrelated parts of the gun. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
