error 998

Everytime  I open my 3dStudio max 9 program I get this error message:

DLL<C:\program files (x86)\3ds Max 9\stdplugs\Dx Plugins\DxDDS.bmi> failed to initialize. Error Code 998 - Invalid access to memory location

What is this and what does it mean? I have reinstalled the program in the hopes of ridding myself of this but nothing has worked. What can I do?

System specs? OS details? Need more information than you've given us.

Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).

3ds max 9 wasn't made to run on windows 7 it couldn't even run on on vista without a service pack

you can try running in compatibility mode

if this doesn't work you need to upgrade to a new version of Max or downgrade your OS back to XP

Have you applied all SPs / Hotfixes? It definitely won't work without them (and may not work even with them, as already explained).

it looks like SP2 may fix your problem but you will need to determine that on Windows 7

I think you all have been right. I amset up as my Administrator but I keep Getting the message:

"You have insufficient rights. Restart you computer, login with local administrator rights and try again to complete the intallation or uninstallation. If this problem persists, contact your system administrator or authorized Autodesk prosuct dealer.

Error [4.297.1007]"

I have tried everything to get the two service packs to load but both of them show up with this problem. How can I get around it?

You generally need to login as THE Administrator, not AN Administrator. Install and run Max at least once (as Administrator) before attempting to run it as a normal user.

Upgrade it to what? I cannot afford to bring it current. What would make it useable?
