Am I realy stupid!

I am trying to learn auto lisp but I think I stop with it , because I feel my self stupid.

I try to make the samples of this site https://www.autolisp-exchange.com/Tutorials/MyDialogs.htm

but the only two that works are the samples "my first" and the sample "My Bold Text".

Is it me or are there some mistakes in the samples?

Perhaps you can go into detail exactly which other ones you've tried on that site that did NOT work.

What did you type into AutoCAD's command prompt to load the routine?

What did you type in to launch the new lisp function?

What error messages appear afterwards?

So far here are the ones I've tested on that site which works:

Command: (load"myalert1")

Command: (MyAlert1 " My Message" "I'm going to figure this out.")

Command: (load"myalert2")

Command: (MyAlert2 "Attention AutoCAD" "Not only am I going to figure this out," "but I'm going to be good at it!")

Now the website does mistakenly show separating to two lines:

; Syntax: (MyAlert2 " Attention AutoCAD" "Not only am I going to figure this out,"
; "but I'm going to be good at it!")

When it should be a single line like this:

; Syntax: (MyAlert2 " Attention AutoCAD" "Not only am I going to figure this out," "but I'm going to be good at it!")

Command: (load"MyOkCancel")

Command: MyOkCancel

Command: (load"MyYesNo")

Command: (MyYesNo " My Yes No" "Do you like creating programs in AutoLISP?")

There are other sites like Afralisp that have dcl tutorials. If you explain what your trying to do some more examples that work can be provided. DCL's can be very complex and have sub DCL's known as Child. Sliders plus other features like (acad_colordlg 1) is an inbuilt one, copy and paste to command line.

I do know that you're smart enough to come to this forum seeking help.

I remember the days when @dbroad taught me everything I know. 'Course I still don't know nuthin.

A couple of DCL examples. No code. 1st is call a child. 2nd a big input of values, 3rd DCL with image.

Again explain what your thinking about using the dcl for, some one may have one close to what you want.

You can even use a dwg to make a dcl, this is radio buttons dcl, edit heading and copy/delete the circles and change the text a lisp makes the dcl code. I have toggles and Edit boxes also.

The code to make a dcl will cost you a beer.

Google RLX has done some really great DCL's and will probably help you if you ask nicely.

I usually skip over posts with these kinds of titles that beg for insults, tell me nothing about the topic, and are likely to waste my time. Post 1 was relatively uniformative so even if I'd clicked on the thread, I would've stopped there. For example, how many did the OP actually test? Did he stop at the first problem? Did he copy/paste? Did he keep saving each dialog over the last dialog and then expect the earlier ones to work? Did he read the instructions? Etc.

I just tested down through My OK/Cancel and had no issues with any of them.

If the OP really wants to learn DCL (as opposed to his first post's claim about trying to learning about lisp), then entering DCL in the search bar of this forum is a more "intelligent" approach than dissing someone who's provided a helpful webpage.

The last thing anyone should be studying when learning AutoLISP is how to implement dialogs. Good dialog implementation requires that one has already mastered AutoLISP basics. For example, out of the thousands of programs I've written, probabaly less than 10 include dialogs that I use regularly.

Dbroad yes agree learn lisp 1st with getstring, getint & getreal make that work then think about a DCL they can be so tricky 1 mistake that you can not see and they dont work.

Dbroad I do all my coding now when possible with DCL for input, but I did write library DCL lisps, that can be used in any code, and keep adding to them. Even down to say a single get, I just don't use initget anymore. Your welcome to use any of them or try them, just ask.

I use the library functions to write dcl code by setting a file name, then use RLX great convert dcl to lisp, then cut and paste together so makes complex DCL code within a lisp, no need for an actual dcl file.

I have started on write dcl from objects in a dwg using lisp, the objects are blocks and text. You draw the dcl. Again Radio buttons, Toggles and edit boxes. Very simple dcl's limited to 1 type at moment and single column.

Many hours went into learning about child dcl's and using functions like sliders, even now go back to code written over 30 years ago to see how I did it.
