Q to Joe Sutphin on New Book

Hi Joe,

I see in one of the threads you've got a new book coming out soon. Can you please tell us a bit about this? Is it an update to your previous book or is it a new one altogether? And if it is new, broadly what does it cover? Will it be an e-book or a paper book?

Hi Wayne,

My new book is an update/upgrade edition of the original. The section covering an Introduction to the Visual Basic programming language and the AutoCAD VBAIDE have been completely re-written and improved based on numerous feedback from readers including the addition of material covering application creation.

There are additional chapters covering information missing from the first edition including preferences, the windows api and applications that connect to MS Office applications. There will be a number of example applications demonstrating connecting to various MS office including Access, Excel, Outlook and Word.

There will be an entire chapter devoted to programming the VBAIDE and several example applications including a code-generating entity creation tool and source code management.

Lastly, there will be several chapters covering what's new in 2004 and an addition Appendix that is a cross reference of objects, methods, properties and events from 2000-2004.

Currently the book will be about 800-900 pages and is being published by

Hi, Joe:

I would like to see some in-depth coverage of extended entity data and dictionaries (XRecords). Maybe in SP1? ;o)

As an alternative, is there a way to create my own objects? Can I create a new class that inherits from an existing class (like a line entity)? (PS: I use Delphi for approximately 95% of my AutoCAD / MS Office automation projects.)

An example: I would like to define a custome entity - let's call it a wire. The wire is a line entity, but there is certain data that needs to be associated with it (net name, start pin, end pin, etc.) and stored in the drawing database. I'm doing this now by creating a line object and attaching extended data to it. The problem is, users can "manually" add "wires" by simply drawing a line on the correct layer (no data attached). When it comes time to generate reports or do any kind of analysis, I run into all kinds of problems.

Your situation would require custom entities [a line is now an entity and you would create a "wire" entity]. This would require Visual C++ and ObjectARX to acheive, neither of which will even be mentioned in my book. Sorry ...

I just realised I should let you know about an error in the AutoCAD 2000 VBA Programmers's Reference. I found the error probably a couple of years ago now and it was only a slight inconvenience to me at the time.

In the AutoCAD Object Summary - AcadText Object Properties on pages 564 & 565. The references to the Horizontal Alignment property affecting the use of the InsertionPoint & TextAlignmentPoint properties are incorrect. The references to the Alignment property affecting the use of the InsertionPoint & TextAlignmentPoint properties are correct.

I look forward to getting a copy of the new book.

To resize the form copy the code from Jose's link into your form code. While running the form grab the lower right corner and start moving the mouse.
