topic SQL database size in Vault Forum

Hi all,

we are trying to update the Vault to 2023.

Our SQL database is already over 10GB, so the Autodesk reseller is advising to pass from SQL Express to the Standard edition. That involves additional costs, so I would need your help to understand better.

What version of SQL have you got on your server? Is there any way to work (our reseller has mentioned using purge) or it would be a nightmare?

What does affect the size of SQL database, are there tips to follow for maintaining the size low?

Thanks.

A purge might help. Also stop indexing properties you do not need. But will not help that much.

Best case you postpone sql upgrade a couple months. I'd do SQL upgrade now.

SQL standard is fine, unless IT needs enterprise due to license agreements.

If you are at the point where it is recording that the database is Full, you will not be able to perform a purge. Even before that, a purge will not shrink the database size. It only opens up empty space. SQL will no longer perform writes to the database, and you will not be able to use Vault.

You are already at the point where you need to upgrade to SQL Standard.

Thank you @ihayesjr and @jorgen.bjornes

so it looks that we need to buy the SQL Standard.

I am being involved in this because our IT manager is refusing to talk to the Autodesk reseller, and I know nothing about servers, their OS and software.

Anyway, the 2nd thing to clarify is: our new server comes with Windows Server 2022, but that is not in the list of Autodesk recommendations (see here) It goes up to 2019. Our IT manager is saying that we might be in the situation in a couple of years to need 2022 again and spend money for buying it again. My question: is it because the list is not updated, or 2022 isn't good for Vault?

The 3rd question: we were planning to install Vault and Inventor 2023. Upgrading Vault looks complicated so Autodesk reseller is involved and it comes with a cost, so we are upgrading every 2 years. I was awaiting for the new server, and just yesterday realized that 2024 versions are available. Is it safe to jump to 2024?

Wow. An IT manager that refuses to talk to a major and important IT supplier. Sounds interesting...

Vault 2024 supports 2022 server. https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-Autodesk-Vault-2024-products.html

I'd make sure to stick to system requirements...

2024 should be fine, unless you depend on 3rd party addons etc that is not compatible with 2024 yet.

Yes, I would recommend using your reseller for upgrading unless you are comfortable doing this safely yourself.
