Sorry Olearya that I did not make it clear in my request, I was logged into the Vault using the client software Autodesk Vault Professional 2011 as the local administrator. I selected the delete uncondictionally option and the message was return stating that I did not have enough rights to perform the function.

I have two separate installation of Autodesk Data Management Server 2011. The production server contains one Vault. I wish to copy the folders, security settings, ADMS user accounts, and the life cycle information that exists in the production folder over to my test environment. I do not wish to connect the servers to each other in any way (two totally separate environments). How can I accomplish this task? It is important that I do not populate my test environment with production data!

Thanks in Advance

Norbert Washington

Hi Norbert,

Can you just take a backup from your production environment and just restore it on your test environment? I think that is the most common way of doing what you're talking about.

HI Norbert,

We have the ability to export a configuration file from your production Vault which will contain properties, lifecycle states and other details but will not transfer any user data (which is instance specific, not Vault specific) or Vault content (folder structure).

If you have an older "empty" production Vault backup this may be of use or you could restore the production Vault and remove the production content.

Ultimately maybe the answer is to restore your production Vault to the new server to get user list. Export the cfg file from existing Vault and create a new Vault with the cfg settings:

http://underthehood-autodesk.typepad.com/blog/2009/08/export-and-import-vault-settings.html

You will still need to add user access to the new empty Vault, resolve property mapping and recreate folders but it is less work than starting again.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. I have tried backup and restore to my test server, however when I attempt to delete the data on the test server I get a permissions denied message.

Most likely you will need to carry out this task logged in as administrator and if you have any file of folder restrictions like the following they will need to be removed:

State Based Security on documents

Item file restrictions

Folder ACL's

Please note when logged in as administrator you will still need to expand the "Details" section of the Delete restriction dialog and select "Delete Unconditionally"

HI Again,

As I mentioned you will also need to remove any state based security - does your company use Items? If that is the case you would need to remove the items then the files. Items will need to be changed to WIP if they are released then removed.

If you are using document based security you would need to remove the lifecycle state restrictions - for example give each of the lifecycle states read/modify/delete access for at very least the administrator. You could revert these security controls later.

I will use your original suggestion. It appears to be least problematic way of getting the task completed, and the database is guaranteed to be free of data.
