I think the log part of the message is misleading--since I believe additional information would only get written out to a log if you do some further non-default configuration (which I'll describe at the end of the message below).

The error is indicating that a COM error occurred related to Apprentice. Typically it is that it couldn't find Inventor Apprentice in the registry, or it did find it, but it encountered a problem starting it. If you enable the additional logging, you would probably see an entry like the one below:

Resolve failed with exception Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {C343ED84-A129-11D3-B799-0060B0F159EF} failed due to the following error: 80040154 Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)).

One known way to cause this to happen is to run Vault Explorer using "Run as administrator" (not supported). When doing this, it changes the application's view of the registry to be an administrator's view. Inventor apprentice is only registered in the "user" part of the registry. So, if Vault Explorer is run like this, it cannot find Inventor Apprentice in the registry.

I assume this is not your case, but I'm just mentioning it as an example.

Hope that helps. Thanks,

- Matt

Additional Logging instructions:

How to get additional logging to occur for this particular situation:

1. Edit the file Connectivity.VaultPro.exe.config (located in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Vault Professional 2014\Explorer). (Note: the configuration file name/path might be different depending on which flavor of Vault you have).

2. Find <add key="DataManagement.Common.Logging.Enabled" value="false"/> and change the value to true

3. Edit the file logging_DMclient.config (in the same directory)

4. Find <add switchValue="All" name="UpdateFileReferences">

5. Uncomment the following line (i.e. remove <!-- and -->) so it looks as follows:

<add name="Rolling Flat File Trace Listener" />

Now re-run the application and run the problematic workflow. In the same directory you should see a rolling.log file.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for the instructions to create the log. That works fine.

After looking at the log, I still couldn't work out exactly what was causing the problem - and I get the same checkout errors about Apprentice failing to load.

I have narrowed it down a bit, and I can reproduce it every time now, in Vault 2016 Basic:

It seems that after renaming a few parts in Vault, the file references fail to update properly, which is worrying for me, to say the least.

I've checked in a whole bunch of files from a FG assembly, with the "Delete Local Copy" option enabled.

Then, I've renamed a few parts in Vault (I have 'enforce unique file names' option enabled), to avoid having hundreds of 'skeletons' and 'frames' with the same name.

After that, even if I click the "Update File References" in Vault, the references do not update properly, and when I try to Get/Checkout the related files I get this error.

I have raised Case ID: 10778373 for this, and uploaded the dataset to reproduce it with (including the rolling.log file tracking the error events), to my A360 space. If you could not access the case files, and wish to have a look, send me a message and I'll email you the link.

Regards,

Daniel

Hi there,

I have this problem too. I have two Vault systems set up, one at home one at work, the work one has this problem the home one does not. What I have noticed is the home one has multiple versions of the MS SQL Server, ie 2008-2014. The work one only has MS SQL 2008, but is using Vault Basic 2016. Can you please check your "Programs and Feature" to check if there is some consistancy there.

Regards

John

A solution that has worked for me we to update all referances.

I selected my top level vault folder and used the Update Referances Action (one afternoon just as I was going home as it will take a long time) this seems to have solved my issue.

Hope this helps someone!

Hi,

I'm also having the same issue when trying to copydesign in the vault.

The problem does occur on specific assemblies. I tried with and without removing iLogic rules in the copydesign process. The result is the same.

I also tried updating all references from the Actions menu in the vault without success.

I also get an "Unspecefied error (Exception from HRESULT:0x80004005 (E_FAIL))"

Is Autodesk working on this issue? It's making it impossible to work using copy design...

Ok... Here's another Error message I got when trying to check-out the files I wanted to copy.

It still checked out the files.

I was able to save the assembly and check the files back in the vault.

After this, I was able to copydesign the assembly. It's a workaround...

But I often get Inventor Apprentice failed to load messages during various vault related operations (rename, copy, move) and this problem still need to be fixed addressed.
