Do all files stored within Vault need to have unique names or does Vault act like windows explorer in that unique names are only required within the same folder?

Thanks

The vault has an option to allow or dis-allow duplicate file names. If the vault is set to allow duplicate file names, then the vault will "act" like windows explorer in that unique names are only required within the same folder.

Does this option make vault resemble the traditional windows format of unique file names within folders or can you put three part files named "bottom.ipt" in a single folder?

You will still have a restriction of placing duplicate file names into a single folder. As you stated..."resemble the traditional windows format of unique file names within folders".

You can have a DRAWINGA.ipt, DRAWINGA.idw, DRAWINGA.dwg in the same folder **** these are NOT identical.

You cannot have "three part files named "bottom.ipt" in a single folder."

Obviously this is a duplicate post but just for clarity, it's entirely your decision too, but it's highly recommended when working with Inventor data to always have this setting enabled if possible, to prevent duplicate files existing in the Vault.

To add on, I would suggest using an auto-number scheme of some kind to name your files/number your parts, and use properties like description and/or project name or something like that to identify parts.

With the basic search, having many files with the same name can lead to pretty serious confusion.
