Hello,

Not sure if this is an Inventor question or Vault question, but hopefully someone can help me out here.

My company is now in the transition to use Vault, but I found one issue that I'd love to fix before we go live.

When a file is checked in (not editable) and I press CTRL+S by habbit (or any other save function), it triggers the Save As dialog and pulls a new drawing number from the number sequence I've set in Vault. Without fixing this we'll end up with many unused drawing numbers.

Is this fixable?

I've tried to create an iLogic rule, but it triggers After the Save As dialog pops up and pulls a new drawing number.

Also added the same kind of logic to my custom addin, but the same happens.

I've also made sure the promts are set to "Always promt" on file edit.

Thanks for any help 🙂

After a file has been checked into Vault the Read-Only attribute is applied to it preventing anything from saving directly to that file.

Be careful which ever direction you go here; take into account that if in fact you want to save changes to a file that is checked in, in effect you will be dirtying that file. Not exactly sure why you would want to do that but I'd suggest not doing so.

What is the end goal here? Lets say after you "force" saving changes to a checked in file, what do you want to do with it at that stage?

On a side note, numbers are cheap and free. Unless your company has an explicit reason to make sure you use every single available drawing "name" or number, who cares if you skip one or two here and there. We produce files like that daily, some get used some don't.

Maybe it was a bit unclear what I actually want, but I of course don't want to actually save the file while its in read only mode. I just don't want the Save As dialog to appear and pull a new number if I'm accidentally attemting to save a checked in file.

I agree it a few skipped numbers doesnt matter, but I'm going to pull a lot of them by habbit.

As I recall, Vault does not actually commit to pulling the part number until the save is successful. If the user hits the cancel button and does not actually save the copy, then Vault won't use the number.

This workaround requires that the user notices that the Save-Copy dialog is open, not the normal save dialog, and stops the save process.

There still is the potential for making an unwanted copy and pulling a new part number.

It is useful to have a test Vault to try various workflows as part of the IT infrastructure.

One quirk of Vault is that many configurations are editable until they are used for the first time. Once an automatic part number system is used, it can't be changed. Instead the admin has to make a new system with the changes, then enable it for all users.

We have some configuration choices that were made 15 years ago that are too deep in the history data to be worth the effort to change.

Sorry to say that it does indeed consume a number even though I click cancel.

It must be a setting to stop this behaviour right? This seems too weird to be intended in my opinion.

Luckily I'm in test environment now, and consuming numbers now is not a problem. Not real numbers, and everything will be cleaned up before importing the real data.

I am not sure where our numbering system is controlled from but however it's done hitting the cancel button does not pull a new number.

As you might be able to see in my video below, this is not the case for me.

I'm very interested if you have time to check with your Vault Admin if you're using Vaults integrated numbering system or not.

<video-js data-video-id="6349371543112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

sorry to take so long to get back to you. Today I confirmed that we are using the built in number assigning system that comes with Vault.

Screen grab of that window. There is no cancel, just a skip option. Clicking the X in upper right corner appears to work the same as the skip button since the Save As window allowing you to name the file yourself appears immediately after this.

Not much help there as I know little about the inner workings of this area.

The reason you do not see the @ampster402 dialog is that you have only one numbering scheme defined in Vault. You would see the numbering dialog @ampster402 shows if you had multiple numbering schemes defined.

Since you only have one numbering scheme, it will bypass that dialog and assign the number because you are telling Inventor to save the file.

No, there is no way to bypass this.
