Vault Pro 2016 - Unknown error during publish with Inventor files

Ok, this seems to be a "common" problem judging by the amount of posts on it.

I'm getting this as well, but somewhat inconsistent, so i've tried everything i could find on this subject but nothing seems to help.

I've tried things found here:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/vault-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Vault-Updating-visualization-of-Inventor-file-produces-Unknown-Error-during-publish.html

But neither setting a new project or changing the job processor value helped (i get the error even when updating locally) and the design data is pointing to the right location.

http://crackingthevault.typepad.com/crackingthevault/2014/02/job-processor-unknown-error-during-publish.html

http://crackingthevault.typepad.com/crackingthevault/2014/03/job-processor-unknown-error-during-publish.html

http://crackingthevault.typepad.com/crackingthevault/2014/02/job-processor-unknown-error-during-publish-1.html

none of the conditions on these pages apply

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/vault-general-discussion/unknown-error-during-publish-dwf-job-queue/m-p/5712164#M58767

I've checked the publish settings and they were all default, resetting did nothing and "publish screenshot" wasn't checked in any of the options.

One thing i also tried (after reading one of the "cracking the vault" pages) was to make a dwf from Inventor for one of the files that i couldn't update in Vault. (export > dwf)

This worked without any problems.

I can also check out a file and check it back in and the dwf will be generated, it just won't do it from Vault...

The inconsistent part is that this doesn't happen to all files, some will update properly, from vault, with job processor or locally, during check in...

Seeing as i want to update everything i don't want to manually check out and back in, that would take ages...

Just to clarify, i'm only seeing this with Inventor files so far... mainly iam and ipt, i haven't gotten to the ipn's and idw's yet.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to what i've found already?

Job Processor is sometimes (depending on vault configuration), one of those "necessary evils" of vault - off hand, I would probably say I've fought more with Job Processor than any other feature 😞

You can try turning on extended logging for Job Processor to see if it helps you diagnose the issue. Also, make sure you have MS Office installed and activated on the machine especially if you have iParts/iAssemblies in the mix. I've seen this cause the issue you are referring to in the past.

You may want to check into our Job Queue Monitor utility (entirely free). While it won't help you alleviate the issue, it will help you to get notified of what is happening with the Job Queue. We built it specifically because we know from experience that once you implement Job Processor, you have to babysit it to see what's going on. https://www.solidcad.ca/vault-toolkit/jobqueuemonitor/

-Ryan

Hmm... does updating locally from Vault also go through the job processor then?

It's pretty confusing, i looked up how to check the logs:
http://help.autodesk.com/view/VAULT/2016/ENU/?guid=GUID-E24006E7-8A17-4E4A-A535-6771DE790B71

But when i check the logs in the event viewer i can't find any "job processor" entries...
There is a log .txt file in the directory where the config resides, but that only reports if a job was successful or not...

@brendan.henderson If i understood the page properly, their job queue monitor is part of their toolkit, which is linked in ryan's signature.

Hmm... does updating locally from Vault also go through the job processor then?

I guess this answers my question:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/vault-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Job-Processor-Troubleshooting.html

Especially this line:

Try publishing a DWF using the "Update Locally" option in the Vault client? This forces the file to be published on the local machine and not send it to the Job Processor. Could indicate an issue with the JP client itself

So i guess it might not be job processor related, since dwf creation also fails when updating locally from the vault client.

Dwf creation during check in from Inventor works, but updating locally from Vault fails... at least for some files...

What is done differently between these two methods?

If anyone is willing to try, i've singled out a part that has the "unknown error during publish".

So forget the job processor, this part will create a dwf during check in from inventor but not when trying to update locally in the Vault client.

If someone could try this as well, so i can see if it might be part/model related...

A lot of this is legacy stuff, the part in question was originally made in 2002, but i haven't checked this for all files...

This one i did a "save copy as" on to create the testpart, i've done "rebuild all" on it as well but that didn't help.

(IV2016 file)

Same result here. Checked in and Update Locally and DWF is created fine. Released, so DWF created by JP and DWF is created fine.

Is the file you supplied migrated to your Inventor version? I have a vague memory that opening an unmigrated file that is not in the Vault and checking it in (so first check into Vault) does a save and migrate on the fly. As this file is historic and already exists in Vault this may not apply. I have had some issues with Navisworks with unmigrated files and Inventor/Vault with dirty files caused by some (in an assy) not being migrated, hinting that Inventor may be doing something in the background.

Is this one of your modelled files or does it cme from another program? The Model tree suggests you modelled it. I have issues with creating DWF's of STEP files originating from Pro/E.

Yes and Yes, it has always been migrated between versions through task scheduler migrate and we modelled it ourselves.

It's just one of many parts that's showing the error, but since both of you don't get the error i now need to figure out what's different in the software...

I've also tried updating locally on another station and it behaves the same as mine.

Would the SP level of the Vault server matter for this? i think ours is still "vanilla", but the clients are updated...

(i am kinda assuming that it's the client that handles this, since Inventor is required...)

Just for reference, these are the publish settings in the Vault client:

These are default, if i hit reset it goes back to these... are you guys using the same settings?

I've tested your file on my system:

- Vault Pro 2016 RTM on server and client

- Inventor 2016 SP1

I had no issue creating the DWF upon checkin, through Vault client manually and through Job processor.

I also have the same visualisation settings as in your screen shot.

DWF creation was always done with Admin user (even in JP).

Vault 2016 RTM.... so that rules out any influence for the service packs...

Thanks Marina!
I've done Dwf creation as admin and document manager (lv2) user, neither worked...

This is getting really hard to troubleshoot, since it does this for some files but not for others...
Really wish the error description wasn't so generic. 😞

Just my wild thought.

Did you ever check your category rules for files? Did you happen to categorize your dwf files to some category other than the Base category? DWF files should never be categorized and should always remain Base category with no lifecycles and no revisions.

Hmm... this is how it was set up for us by our reseller:

If i'm reading that correctly it should only apply to dwf's that get added to the Vault as an actual document (not hidden).

There is no other rule for dwf, so i'd assume (again with the assumption 😉 ) that the automatic dwf's would go to the base category.

Sometimes people will incorrectly set the rule for ipt files, for example, as:

File Name contains .ipt

So dwf files like Testpart.ipt.dwf will be incorrectly assign to the Part category.

<STRIKE>And I checked the rules as shown in your picture, unfortunately it does not work as designed.</STRIKE>

<STRIKE> </STRIKE>

<STRIKE>So I guess all your dwf files are categorized to the Mechanical Engineering category?</STRIKE>

Sorry, made some mistake.

The rules for .ipt are set up with "contains"... setting them to "is" would be better, yes?

It is set for "file extension" though, that should mean the last 3 characters preceded by a point, right?

(actually all the rules are set up with "contains" for the file extension...)

Use "contains" for File Extension should be OK, unless there are some weird file extension like .iptt.
