I am going to be honest... I can't figure out how to get Vault Basic setup...

I have looked through all the help guides and installation requirements but still have no idea how all the pieces of vault fit together.

DISCLAIMER: I have a reasonable understanding of networking and PC know-how so I haven't come here without great reason.

Does anyone know where I am supposed to look to get things situated. I am planning to use this in conjunction with Inventor and AutoCAD.

Thank you,

Byron

@Anonymous

Welcome to the community..

First you either need a server or PC that will host the Vault server. You install the Vault server interface (called the ADMS Console) and the install will put on SQL Express. If you want to use the full version of SQL then you need to install SQL first and configure it. Once Vault server is installed then you launch the ADMS console and setup your Vault and few other settings.

Then on the clients machines you install the CAD application and then the client install. Certain CAD installations will contain the vault client install. Keep in mind the Vault client can only be installed on machines that have AutoCAD, Inventor and etc. The Vault client install will be the vault add-in for Inventor and AutoCAD.

My advice is to contact a reseller in your area and have a discussion about this. Although Vault basic is simple to get going, understanding Vault is another subject and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Like I said a reseller would help, but you can start here and this one as well

While I agree with Mark, you easiest path may be to get with a re-seller, that was never an option for me.

A re-seller would never have been allow to access our systems to do any of this setup.

The only thing my re-seller has ever been able to do for me was sell me the software and supply outside basic software training.

Although we never sent anyone out for Vault training because every installation is unique to the company's setup (unless of course the re-seller set you up and they are teaching their setup to you).

So all of our CAD setups and installation have been done by myself for the past 20 years coming from Acad to MDT to IV to IV+Vault.

We started using Vault I believe with the 2010 release (basic) and now I am finally developing the use of Pro to get away from my manual Check/Release Process.

So my Vault setup is using the single project file approach with each workstation having a working folder structure that directly mimic the Vault. Our world is a little unique in that we have a "CAD Lab" style of environment where a user can be sitting at any given workstation on any given day. So as long as they fully check in what they are working on from one workstation they then check this out to another the next day (although I will say people like to camp out at just one).

So I dug through some old documentation and found where I had produced a simple doc describing our setup, see Single Vault Project Workspace (2012).pdf

Also recently I have been teaching an in house Vault course on some basic use in our world. This is a larger document (from the presentation teach the class from) but can give you some insight into how a Vault walks and talks. See CVI Vault Environment.pdf

IF you are going to start out with just Basic then this would show how that would work in a single project environment.

While we are on Pro I have not rolled out my use of lifecyles yet.

Thank you both for your help. I have a good idea of what I am looking for now.

The only missing piece is the Vault Server (Basic). Everything that I have found says that the Vault Basic app should be in the account management page and the download is under "updates and add-ons."

I was under the impression that Vault Basic was included with a product subscription and was free. Am I wrong? When I go to the purchase page for Vault, it only shows Vault Workgroup and Professional as options.

Any ideas?

Byron
