topic Single Vault for Inventor, ACADE & Civil3D?? in Vault Forum

Has anyone had any experience trying to use a single Vault for Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical and Civil3D, or any combinations of the three programs?

It is my understanding that it can be done, but what are the known issues, limitations, advantages and disadvantages if any?

I would prefer to have a vault for each program, as typically here each program is used by a different engineering group.

None of the data is being shared among the programs at this date (but may be a possibility someday in the future), so that aspect really isn't an advantage at this point in time.

I believe this push for a single Vault is a cost saving attempt by our IT group.

Currently we have separate vaults for our Inventor and Civil3D groups.

The ACADE group isn't utilizing Vault to date.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi Michael,

Yes you can split each application into different Vaults on the same server. In terms of cost it would be the same the only difference is for every Vault you make there will be a new database made is SQL.

You can use these three CAD tools all in one Vault without any issue. It's best to do research as the way that AutoCAD electrical uses Vault is different and AutoCAD. Also AutoCAD Civil 3D uses the Vault different to work with the way CAD tools manage data and relationships in a local workflow. It's best to use the Vault add-in to manage Electrical and Civil 3d data so you do not break references to project files.

It's important not to modify files made by different CAD tool like editing Inventor .dwg files with AutoCAD as this would have undesired results. It's always best to use dev server and work through how you will manage files and how you will use lifecycle and Vault security

Thanks,

Jason
