check in/out times in vault

Hi all,

Help is needed before the rest of my hair gets pulled out!

We have a "test" assembly contained 870 items (1800 instances) which on one machine takes approx. 20-30 secs to check in/out and on another identical machine takes approx. 7-8 mins! (we have 6 other machines with the same issue)

Both machines are very high spec and identical in ssd, ram, graphics, builds, updates, hotfixes, operating system etc.

We have spent nearly 4 days of testing network locations, through different switch boxes, bypassing proxy servers, disabling anti-virus and all the other tricks and tips that we have found on the forums and knowledge bases.

We think its pointing to software configuration as we swapped out the faster machines hard drive with the slower one and hey presto the slow machine was doing 20-30 secs!, having looked at the top level options in both inventor and vault they are identical so we really are stuck for other ideas!

The vault server has been looked into too to allow more rescources to be used and has only recently had maintenance.

All machines are running Inventor 2017, Vault 2017 professional. with all builds being identical.

So over to you inventor/vault gurus!

First suggestion is to work on one side of this at a time. Start with the Check Out.

In the Vault client, just perform the Get command on the assembly. Make sure your working folder doesn't already have the files in it. How long does this take?
After #1, perform a Get again. This shouldn't transfer any file as they are already in the workspace. Confirm this only takes seconds.
Clear the workspace again. Perform the Get command on the assembly in the Vault client but also select the option to Checkout the files. How long does this take?
Clear the workspace. Perform an Open from Vault on the assembly. Do not check the files out. How long does this take?

Hi Irvin,

Step 1 : approx 15 secs.

Step 2 : yes under a second.

Step 3 : approx 17 secs.

Step 4 : approx 58 secs.

Assuming these times are coming from one of the machines which showed the 7 - 8 minutes, it looks like you do not have a Get or Checkout problem.

Not testing the Checkin behavior.

With the entire assembly downloaded on the machine, check out all of the files. Without making any changes, check in all of the files. How long does this take? It should be quick as you didn't make any changes to the files and therefore nothing gets uploaded to the server.
Now you will have to make changes to all of the files. Check them out, should be quick as they are already on the machine. Inside of Inventor, try a Rebuild All. This should force a change to all files. Save the files.
1. Bring up the Check-in dialog. DON'T CLICK OK
2. Check to see if you are creating DWF files during check-in. Are you creating DWFs during check-in? If so, disable this option. Check in the files. How long does it take?

have assumed this is being done all from within vault and not from inventor, so far its looked like below for about 10 mins and counting!

You should be performing check-in of Inventor files using Inventor, not the Vault client.

ok, step 1 checking back in through vault : approx. 5 mins, this is without any changes.

cant try step 2 as now about to leave off but am going to say it will be at least the same based on previous tests I have done

I strongly recommend against checking in Inventor files through the Vault client. These should only be checked in through Inventor. Please try these with Inventor. You can also check your server logs to see if there are issues during this time of testing. But again, only check in Inventor files using Inventor not the Vault client.

sorry I mistyped! the times in the last post were checked in through inventor.

with reference to the start of this thread all times stated were done checking in and out through inventor not the vault client (we were advised before not to do this thru vault so apols if I have misled you)

checking out files and checking in files wise the time doesn't really differ just basically really really slow (except on one machine which takes seconds both ways)

So we still need to isolate the Checkout from the Checkin. Your first timing results were all less than 1 minute. Were these from inside of Inventor?

all times (which were under a minute) were from vault.

any other times ie the 6-7 min range etc were from within inventor (both checkin/out)

So you still have to separate checkin from checkout. If you are not making any changes to the files, Inventor isn't asking you to save the files prior to checkin, Vault actually performs an undo checkout because nothing has changed. This should take seconds to perform. Can you confirm that new versions of the file are not being created during this test?

inventor asks to save before it will allow you to check the files back in, so I would assume that new files are being created (how would I check this?) if this is the case then I can understand the time taken to check back in but not check out.

Is there a setting that I may have missed that calls for creating a new version when checking back in?

as I said earlier slow times are on 7 out of 8 machines (ie only 1 is fast both in and out) I exported the inventor config (taken from options) from the fast machine and imported it to the slower ones but no change, or is it a vault setting? again if this is the case why 7 slow 1 fast?

I wont be able to check any settings or speeds now as im at home (current uk time 10pm) and wont be back into work for another 10 hrs

If performing a Get in the Vault Client is less than 1 minute you need to check how long it is taking Inventor to open the assembly locally.

Perform the Get using the Vault client.
Open Inventor, DO NOT LOG INTO VAULT, open the assembly. How long does this take?
Are you opening the assembly in Full or Express mode? What is the timing difference between the two modes?
Inside of Inventor with the assembly already open, perform a Check-out. Do not select Yes if the prompt to update properties appear.
1. How long does it take to check the files out?
2. Does Inventor indicate that they need to be saved?
Perform an Undo Checkout inside of Inventor. How long does this take?
Check the Inventor Application Options, and on the Save tab see if Prompt for re-computable Updates is checked. Is it checked and if so uncheck it and try the above steps again?

Do you have any third party add-ins installed in Inventor?
