Hi all,

I'm not sure how to put this in words, so I'll use a hypothetical example to help illustrate what I'm trying to do.

Suppose I have an assembly called Assy1 that contains PartA, PartB, PartC. At some point along the way, I am satisfied with the assembly, so I want to keep this design configuration. After a little while, I think of a different design that could be more optimal, or at least, is something that I would like to visualize/perform a trade study. Rather than creating new components, I modify the components that were initially created to achieve the new design, and I save over Assy1 with this new design. The problem occurs when I want to go look at the old design. Even though the changes/revisions are saved in Vault, I have not been able to find a satisfactory way to implement a "snapshot" of a design, where I can go back and view the old design next to the old design, short of deleting my VaultWork folder, "getting" the old versions of the files and assemblies, and then opening the top level assembly (and hoping changes you made along the way haven't significantly broken the model). I also found this post, which says I need "release" the assembly (which would lock it down from editing), which would essentially make a snapshot at that point in history. The part file could still be changed to work in progress and edited, and assy2 could be also released, which would lock down the part file at that point in history, leaving Assy1 at that point in time untouched.

Is there a more formal way of performing this task? In reality I have many parts, subassemblies, and assemblies, so uploading multiple configurations is not an suitable option for me.

Thanks,

Andy

Not sure which version of Vault you've got, but if revision control isn't a suitable option for whatever reason, take a look at labels:

Hey Neal,

Thanks for your reply. I'll look at labels.

We're using Vault Professional 2017. If there's any other tools I can use within this version, let me know. Thanks.

Yes, when doing a Get of the files you get the option of picking a previous revision of the assembly. It'll then download that old revision and all the parts as they were when that old revision was released.

Thank you! I had no idea Get worked like that. I thought it just took the top level assembly, but didn't take any of the changes that were made to lower level components (higher level?)
