I would like some help with a problem that I and a lot of our customers are running into.

It has to do with the Physical Property "Mass" in Inventor and displaying this value in Vault.

As you might know you can't map the previously mentioned property to Vault directly.

To show the property in Vault you first have to create a custom property in Inventor (With the formula "=<MASS>") or use some iLogic code (of instance) to copy the standard property to a property that can be mapped in Vault.

The problem we run into is the following:

The mapping works as expected most of the time, but there are some situations where the mass isn't updated correctly which results in the wrong "TotalMass" in Vault.
And because we use Vault Professional for a lot of our customers we also get the wrong "TotalMass" in Items and you can imagine the trouble this can cause to the business of both us and our customers.

I was able to identify at least one situation where I am able to reproduce this problem and I created a screencast recording of this.

The first 2 minutes of this video show how you can reproduce this problem and the last 2 minutes show how you can avoid the problem from occurring.

You can clearly see that somehow the save action that happens when you check in the models is different from the "manual" save action that I perform in the second part of the recording.

Edit:

I already enabled the "Update Physical Properties on save", for parts and assemblies;-)

Screencast will be displayed here after you click Post.
7337db0d-ca09-4b92-9cc4-ca324d87a9b4

Hi,

From the video, I see that the mass of the new part was ~48 cubic units. After shell operation, I expect the mass value to be lesser but I am not sure how much it is supposed to be. I would like to see if the mass value in Inventor after the shell operation is the same as displayed in Vault.

Regards,

Hello Madhan,

I believe you are referring to the second part of the video (after the 2:15 minute mark).

That part of the video is just to show that there is a difference when I manually save the assembly after modifying a part in the assembly (and thus changing the mass) and don't "misuse" the check-in command to save both the assembly and the part.

To answer your question, in the second part of the video the mass in Vault is the same as the mass in Inventor for both the part and the assembly, 7,128 grams. But like I said, it's just in the first part of the video where something goes wrong:-)

Hi,

I think I understand the issue now. I will try to reproduce and update you. Basically, there seems to be a difference if the File is saved through API.

Regards,

Hi,

I think I see that if I say "Yes" to save and cancel to check-in dialogue, the calculated property has been set to (N/A) which is incorrect. However, If I just click "Update Mass" before check-in, I could see the correct value. I will log this as a change request to get this addressed.

Regards,

Thank you for chasing this up by logging a support case directly with Autodesk.

I have published an Article that displays the current status of the issue with Autodesk development.

Here is the link:-
