Correct the CAD File Association for Non-CAD Users in Vault Thick Client

Users that do not have Inventor and/or AutoCAD installed, are not able to easily Open or View files with a Double-Click action in Vault thick client interface... this will result in errors.

"This file was created with Inventor. We cannot find this application on your computer"

For Inventor files, they have to Right-Click > View in Window... If it an AutoCAD DWG file, the have to 'Get' file > and manually open in DWG Trueview. There is no consideration in regard to file type associations, for users that might need to easily and quickly view design files through the Vault Thick client.

Thank you for posting your Idea, but I moved it to the discussion forum for a conversation.

Vault is not designed to open any type of file. It will always use a viewer to open those file. Therefore there will always be a need for Inventor View, DWG TrueView or using Design Review to open DWF files. I do recommend using DWFs or PDFs for the non-CAD user so you can limit the applications needed by them.

Agreed. Vault needs a viewer to open files.

The problem is that it defaults to an application that is not installed, then gives an error.

Even if I have Inventor View installed, Vault tries to load Inventor, then fails.

The suggestion to use inventor view for inventor files, for Open command, when Inventor is missing -> is under consideration by Vault team.
