Trent,

Thanks for the reply but that doesn't totally solve my problem. The problem is I don't know what the drawing file name is. What i'm looking for is a search to search for multiple files that share part of the same name, but have different extensions. I have tried all different ways to get this to work but have no avail. Having to go through tens of thousands of files individually is going to take along time. Below is one that I found and superseded.

I'm trying to run a search in Vault 2018 that will find files with the same name but have different extensions. We had old files scanned into a *.tif format, some of the files eventually were recreated into ipt/idw files. I'm just trying to figure out which ones have already been done. Our vault has over 475k files in it to be reviewed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After rereading my original post I forgot to add the the files aren't exact duplicate's but they contain similar numbers example would be "123456.idw" and "oldtransfer123456.tif". Now some of the old .tifs that where redone in cadd were superseded in vault, but not all of them. I just need some help or direction were to look in how to get these variables to work together, to find and finish redrawing these old files.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Thanks for reaching out on the forums. It sounds like you could use the Vault 'wildcard' characters to do a search for these files. See the guide here:

Searching with Wild Cards

The two main characters are * for any number of characters or ? for just a single one. So for your example you could do a search of filename contains *12345* to get any file that has 12345 in the file.

Here's a screenshot of how the search would work for a common filename like DIN:

Please be aware if you use the first tab of the search you will get a lot more results as it searches content and any indexed property.

I hope this helps but let me know if you run into any issues.

I wanted to follow up and see if using the wild card characters helped with this request or if there was anything else I could assist with.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for getting back to me. You should be able to search the Vault and find all the files listed here using wildcards.

Try searching using *1000415* or 1000415* to find all files that either start with 1000415 or have 1000415 contained in them. Let me know if that gets the results you need or not.

There is also a search slop factor in Vault that you can tune to increase or decrease results:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/vault-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018/ENU/Vault-Admin/files/GUID-25422729-3007-4E0C-8118-35DBDB159AD6-htm.html

I hope that helps but let me know,

Trent,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I was wondering how you would handle to find the part number if you didn't know the duplicate number. I tried to use the duplicate utility and it doesn't seem to work for files the have letters in front of the number ex 123456.prt compared to oldfiles123456.prt. Does that make sense? I've been trying to get it into an excel file but haven't bee successful yet.

Hi @Anonymous

The duplicate filename search only looks for files that have the exact same name in Vault so it would not work for that.

To find a file similar to another filename you could do a search for filename 'contains' then the string you are searching for, but you would need to do the search for each filename string.

If you want to get a full list of the files in Vault to work with in Excel you could try using the reporting tools in Vault Professional. If you are using Vault basic then you can use the search tool then go to File -> export to export the results to xls format.

I hope that helps but let me know if you have any other questions.
