Task Scheduler - Migrate Task does not check-in files (2020)

I am using Task Schdeduler to migrate some of our most used library parts (mainly iparts). I created a Vault task and added the folder that I want to migrate. When it runs, it will check-out the files and migrate/update them without any errors, but that is where it stops. I would think that it would go ahead and check-in the updated files.

Why does it not check the files back into Vault?

So I thought another way to do it was to create a sequential task. My first action was to to migrate the files, so I started with a "Migrate" task. Here when I try to add the folder, the "Browse for Folder" dialog will not go deep enough for me to get to my folder (see image below). There are MANY other folders under the "Drawing" folder shown. I dont see any other way to add the folder.

<STRIKE>Why does the "Browse for Folder" dialog not show all my folders? </STRIKE>

EDIT: Just closed and restarted Task Scheduler and I can add the folder I need. Would rather do it with the Migrate task, so still wondering why Migrate task does not check-in after the migration.

Thanks,

Hi Kirk,

I recall you may need to bump up the revision for the files manually and then check them back in. Otherwise, it can create some confusion to the Vault database, since the file content is not changed.

Many thanks!

If I migrate the files, then the content has changed... correct?

When I run the "migrate files" task, here is the settings I am using for the task.

Attached is the task scheduler log. While the task is running, the files show to be checked-out (as expected), but then when the task is completed, the files no longer show to be checked-out, but they are not out-of-date either. It is like the task scheduler does an undo-checkout rather then checking the files back into Vault.

When I open the files from vault after the task is finished, the files are still the older version, so the updated version is not getting back into Vault.

Thanks,

Kirk

Can you show all of the tasks listed together?

You should have three tasks total.

1. Check Out from Vault

2. Migrate Files

The task should:

1. check-out the files.

2. migrate them.

3. check-in the files.

By treating each of the steps separately, it provides a way to resume from a specific point without having to start over from the beginning if there is an issue in the middle.

For example, if there these steps were all in one task, and a file failed to migrate, you would have to rerun the entire task and it would start over again by trying to check out files it already has checked out. Then it would error at that state because the files are already checked out. With them as separate tasks, all that is needed is to run the Migration step again.

The task that I ran was the "Migrate Files" task. See the attached log. It checked the files out and updated them, but failed to check them into vault. Next, I thought that I could just create a new "Check into Vault" task and check in the folder. But that also failed because it would not allow me to add this folder. Notice how the OK is greyed out.

The only way I can figure out how to add these updated files back to vault is to open them individually in Inventor and check them in thru the application.

This is interesting because we are scheduled to migrate from Vault/Inventor 2019 to 2020 next week.

I recall very similar behavior when attempting to migrate Inventor 2012 files to Inventor 2014. I gave up on trying to use Task Scheduler to migrate Vaulted Inventor files. My assumption at the time was that Autodesk did not test Task Scheduler migrations with a large (400 GB filestore, 10 or more years of production) data set.

Conversations with re-sellers indicate that Task Scheduler does not perform well at this scale. I got recommendations to try to break up the job into smaller parts. I seem to recall trying to limit the number of files to 10-20k per job.

Would a migration tool that ran on the Vault server at minimum priority be a better solution for large data sets? Maybe set it up to migrate the most recently Checked-in files first? It would be nice if Vault could count the number of files at each CAD system version.

I'd love to know what the recommended workflow for migrating Inventor files in Vault with release states.

We chose to migrate on-demand when opening files with Inventor. A potential issue is that we may have some files created with very old versions of Inventor in our filestore. I'd hate to find that the concept model from 2008 won't open correctly in Inventor 2025, or that a FEA setup from 2005 won't open in Inventor 2020..
