Fix numbering scheme to work with period "." delimiter

Currently the "Generate File Number" dialogue box (when promoting files to an assembly) can't handle the period "." delimiter in file names - it seems to assume it's a file extension, and omits it from the file name.

This is my file naming scheme - notice a period delimiting 3 sequential numbers ("###").

Which results in this file name. Notice the 3 sequential numbers have been omitted. So all of my part numbers are the same.

This seems to happen on some dialogue boxes only. E.g. I've created this by using the Promote to new assembly function (Keyboard shortcut: Tab). I don't have the same problem if I'm creating parts using the "New" file dialogue or Frame Generator.

I have the same problem on one of the computers of one of the clients. Vault Porfessional 2020.3.1, Inventor 2020.3.2, Windows 8.1. It works properly on other computers.

Inventor 2020 isn't officially supported on Windows 8.1. What OS are the other computers?

Hi Irvin,

Take a little pride in your product, and create the support ticket yourself. We've taken the time to present you with a problem and your response is equivalent to "We don't fix problems unless they're given to us on a silver platter..."

I've managed products in the past, and my approach was - tell me your problem in any format you like - it's my job to make sure the product works, which means if there's a problem then I want to know about it, I'm not going to turn away comments or complaints because they're not in a standard format - in fact, I'll convert them to that standard format myself just so the process is upheld.

I know, but it worked fine for 5 months. It stopped working overnight and the reason is not Windows or Autodesk fixes, because when it stopped working, nothing was installed.

While I understand your statement, there are a couple of reasons for creating a support ticket.

By creating a support ticket, we have a way to trace back to you directly through the support ticket and possibly have you test possible fixes things prior to releasing a fix to the public.
If we test this configuration and find we cannot reproduce the problem, it could be environmental and therefore we will need to look at your environment or configuration to further investigate the problem.

Somethings can be reproduced and something cannot without assistance from the person experiencing the issue.

I have tried this with Vault Professional 2020.2.1, Inventor 2020.3.2 and Windows 10. I am unable to reproduce the problem. I am going to upgrade Vault Professional and try again.

Can you provide what version of Inventor and Vault you are using? Also, can you provide an image of the numbering scheme configuration so I can try and reproduce?

@ihayesjr - if you're really keen about capturing problems, then you'll add the "origin" of the support call to each support ticket - whether that's the author of the ticket or "on behalf of" some forum user, you'll always have traceability back to the origin.

Back to the problem at hand - I did some more digging. I suspected it was related to the "Hide extensions for known file types" variable in Windows because I've seen a similar problem with some in house software years ago.

Trouble is that it had the opposite effect to what I expected:

WITH the option ticked, and using the "Save file" dialogue I got this result:

without the option ticked, I got this result:

Note that neither filename includes the file extension. The former filename omits both sets of text after the period.

The second filename won't save either (without modification) because it doesn't recognize the file extension ".00":

This is a separate problem belonging to Inventor, not the vault.

There's more:
Using the "Make components" dialogue from within a part, I couldn't replicate the problem. Either with, or without the "Hide File Extension" problem, I could create part numbers with the full sequence, and the files saved successfully.

SO, this suggests that the Vault is correctly generating a filename, but Inventor is truncating the filename it receives from the vault in some dialogues only, not all dialogues - at least for the "Save File" dialogue.

Perhaps this problem belongs in the Inventor forums?

No updates available on the Autodesk App. Several available from the account page. I thought the App was suppose to keep our products up to date?

I am using Windows 10, Vault 2020.3.1 and Inventor 2020.3.2.

Option unchecked for File name extensions

Created a part and clicked save.

Note that the "Save as Type is Autodesk Inventor Parts".

Note the difference when I select "All Files" for Save as type.

Save completes successfully.

With the File name extensions option checked

File is saved successfully.

However, I did find the cause of the problem which can easily be fixed by you.

The last time you saved a file in Inventor, the Save as type drop-down was set to "All Files (*.*).

The next time you went to save the file, the last delimiter section was taken off of the file name.

Create a sample part and set the "Save as type" option to "Autodesk Inventor Parts (*.ipt)".

Then the next time you need to save a file using the numbering scheme the last section of the file name will not be truncated.

This issue I can talk with the Inventor and Vault team to see which product needs to be fixed.

It seems more likely to me that the problem is with Inventor's "file save" dialogue box rather than Vault's "next available number" routine.

You did not change the "Save As" Type at the bottom of the Save dialog. It has nothing to do with the "Hide File Extensions" option in Windows.
