Upgrade path from Vault Basic 2020 to 2022

We are currently running Vault Basic 2020 on a Windows Server 2012R2 with SQL 2014. I know I need a new server, but not sure what intermediate steps are required.

Any advice would be welcome.

Most people install a new server operating system on a new machine. If that is what you are planning here are your steps.

Perform a backup using the ADMS Console on Vault 2020.
Install the new operating system supported by Vault 2022.
1. If you are using an unsupported SQL version, this will need to be updated also.
Install Vault 2022.
Restore the Vault 2020 backup from step 1.

Thanks! Yes, we will be standing up a new server in Azure, and it sounds alot easier than a same server upgrade!

Thanks! Vault basic upgrade is now complete! We are all running the 2020 client, which I assume can continue without concern? (We will at some point update the clients, of course).

Any post install requirements? Is it best practice to delete our local vault files and start with new copies from the new vault, or does it not matter?

Previous version support for the Vault client is meant to give you the additional time to upgrade your clients as needed. It is recommended that you upgrade your Vault clients to match the Vault server version to get the best experience with Vault.

You should not need to delete any local copies in your Vault workspace and should be able to continue working as normal. Hope this helps.

Just a small check. If you install Vault on a new server, can you reuse the license you have for the production server?

Licensing for Vault is client-based, not server-based. It doesn't matter where the server is located.

I meant, can you have a production server and a test server with the same Vault server software at the same time?

Yes, we encourage you to have a production and test servers.
