Item category assign directly from file category.

Hi!

I try to make a assign a Item Category directly from key file category name.

e.g.:

1. Users create Inventor part and check in to the Vault, auto assign gives it "Part",

2. after that users change some files category manually to non-default category.

3. They assign Item to this file, and they want to assign the same category name to this Item. Now they must change this manually again, like in files.

Can I automatically assign the same category name?

If the Item category already exists, you should be able to create an Item rule that will assign a specific category to an Item based on what the File Category Name is. But, the Item Category with the same name has to already be defined.

Example: I created an Item Category called "Same Name". Then generated an Item Rule to automatically assign an Item to that new category if the File Category is also "Same Name". So, this would take some planning and set up, but can be done.

but...

It does not work that way.

Combo box on your pic reading ITEM properties.

Property "Category Name' in this case is ITEM "Category Name", I can't read/mapping from FILE "Category Name" there is the problem

Hi Marek,
The rules used for the category assignation are based on the document properties values (Inventor iProperties or AutoCAD attributes).

Usualy, we set the same rules for items as for the files.

However, I understand that your files are not categorised automatically (through the rules) but manually.

Then, if you want your item to "inherit" the category of the file, you will have to mapp the file category to a document's property (usually a custom iProperty called "Category", "Category Name" or something like that) and then use that document property in your Item category assignation rules...
