Hi, I need to synchronize the Vault File numbering scheme (first free number) with the ERP numbering. ERP should be the source, so I would like to initiate the code to receive the next free Item number from the ERP system when the user save the file to Vault and set this number as "first free number" in Vault. Is this realistic? Thanks

Yes, this is realistic.

There is a Custom Numbering sample in the Vault SDK that should give you some ideas.

The CustomNumberingProvider project would need to be modified to select numbers from the ERP system.

The CustomNumberingGUI project is an example of how to use the custom numbering scheme.
